has announced the “Top ten must-have gadgets for students”. Maybe British students can afford all this 10 items, but at my student times I could hardly afford any one of them. But times change, I hope. So here they are:

If you need something to stop you from nodding off in lectures, Sony Ericsson’s W300i comes with plenty of storage for your MP3s — whenever you feel your eyelids dropping simply plug in your headphones and blast some Scissor Sisters straight into your lugholes.
What we think.
This is a entry-level Walkman phone with a great price tag and feature setEditors’ rating — 7.7
[photopress:Samsung_NV3.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 2. Samsung NV3
Struggling to remember last night after one too many vodkas? Your trusty Samsung NV3 will fill you in on the missing moments and ensure your antics are captured for posterity.
What we think
A great-looking camera that offers impressive image quality and is dead easy to useEditors’ rating - 7.5
[photopress:acer_travelmate3012.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 3. Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi
With a built-in camera and Bluetooth VoIP included, the lightweight Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi has all the features to keep you in touch with friends and family back home — although as yet it’s unable to write your lecture notes for you…
What we think
It includes a number of features that should appeal to mobile professionals, but the lack of an integrated optical drive could deter some usersEditors’ rating - 7.5
[photopress:Samsung_YP_Z5.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 4. Samsung YP-Z5Want an MP3 player that is not restricted to a particular music software? Samsung’s YP-Z5 works like a USB drive — you simply drag and drop your music files onto it, so you can update your player any time you sit down at a computer.
What we think
The YP-Z5 sounds clean and punchy. The touchpad needs an overhaul, but it’s one of the most genuinely exciting MP3 players this yearEditors’ rating - 7.8
[photopress:Nintendo_DS_Lite.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 5. Nintendo DS Lite
It’s not all about study is it? Make the most of your downtime with the Nintendo DS Lite — with Wi-Fi multiplayer you can challenge your new-found friends, your mates back home, in fact why not take on the world?
What we think
The slick new design and brighter screens are an impressive improvement over the original DSEditors’ rating - 8.0
[photopress:Sling_Media_Slingbox.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 6. Sling Media’s Slingbox
your telly to watch your favourite programmes — Sling Media’s Slingbox lets you watch your home TV or set-top box via the Internet, so you’ll never have to miss an episode of Bargain Hunt again…
What we think
It serves its purpose perfectly and comes highly recommendedEditors’ rating - 9.0
[photopress:HTC_TyTN.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 7. HTC TyTN
If you’re the sort of person that can’t remember your own name without your Mum’s help, you probably need HTC’s TyTN. This fiendish gadget makes phone calls, handles emails, is capable of browsing the Web and has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared and HSDPA — it will pretty much run your entire life. Look out for operator-specific versions from T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone.
What we think
We like the impressive range of connectivity options, Direct Push email and the ability to synchronise with our Windows PC, but it is a little too chunkyEditors’ rating - 8.2
[photopress:Nikon_D80.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 8. Nikon D80
Student days are all about experimentation, and what better way to experiment than with the Nikon D80? This dSLR isn’t cheap, but it offers a large feature set and is fully customisable. Pack this in your bag, set Flickr as your homepage and you’re away.
What we think
Lower-end enthusiasts and newbies will love the wide choice of featuresEditors’ rating - 8.0
[photopress:PURE_Digital_Chronos.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 9. PURE Digital Chronos
Alarm clocks might not be at the top of every students’ wish list, but this one deserves to be. PURE Digital’s Chronos combines the delights of DAB radio with four independent alarms, which means you should never miss a 9am lecture again…
What we think
We’re not sure how PURE Digital did it, but the Chronos makes bedside radios glamorous. Decent DAB reception and four independent alarms mean this is a very desirable radioEditors’ rating - 8.0
[photopress:Optoma_MovieTime_DV10.jpg,thumb,alignleft] 10. Optoma MovieTime DV10
If you don’t want to take your entire home-cinema system away to uni with you, the Optoma MovieTime DV10 is a more-than-viable alternative. It plays DVD movies through a projector with superior image quality, and you don’t have to worry about connecting everything up.
What we think
The Optoma MovieTime DV10 is a successful attempt at creating a true all-in-one home cinemaEditors’ rating - 7.7
Well, items 8 & 10 will be put under consideration by my honourable personage
