The popularity of pirates these days can pretty much be attributed to the success of the Pirates Of The Caribbean film franchise. So it’s no surprise when items like this remote controlled pirate ship pop-up in an attempt to cash in on the trend. At just over 40 inches in length the ship bucks the other recent trend of miniature RC toys but at the same time it allows for quite a bit of detailing. In fact when not being used the ship includes a stand for displaying it at home. The fiberglass hull is of course watertight but to sail the ship you need to attach a large running keel to the bottom in order to keep it stable on the open seas. The keel is secured with a couple of easy thumbscrews but the added height means it can’t be sailed in a shallow pond. The ship includes a 2 channel pistol-grip style remote with a range of up to 500 feet and on a full charge you can expect to enjoy up to 6 hours of exploring and pillaging. But at $329.95 from Hammacher Schlemmer you might need to find an actual treasure chest first. Just be aware it’s a commercial that tries hard to sell every single detail as an amazing feature.

Filed under: Handsets, Software, Sony Ericsson Controlling handset envy is always a challenge in this business — without fail, manufacturers inevitably introduce your phone’s successor just as soon as you work up the courage to plunk down that rather sizable wad of cash. Fortunately, there’s a hacker out there for virtually every model from every manufacturer, cooking up ways to keep the phone fresh well beyond its maker’s intended shelf life. Such is the case here: yes, Sony Ericsson would like us to toss our K800s in the trash and pick up the re-upped K810, but seeing how our K800s still have that new phone smell on ‘em, that seems just a bit silly. Users have discovered that the K800 hardware embraces the K810′s firmware with open arms, bringing with it the latter’s cooler themes and improved media player, and all you have to do is pay a few bucks to get it flashed. Not a free lunch, but about as close as it gets. Cool, eh? Heck, it’s so simple, it barely qualifies as a “hack.” [Thanks, David]

The 80’s brought us quite a few innovations in both technology and fashion that we’ll hopefully never see again. But those still clinging to fading memories from that decade will no doubt be happy to carry around this little bit of nostalgia from that era. These wallets (which are more like simple zippered pockets) are fashioned from the empty shells of old cassette tapes. While there’s no slots for credit cards or places for baby photos they should still provide ample storage for a night out. The wallets are all hand made and each one is a unique creation given how few cassettes are actually produced these days. And since the designer Marcella Foschi is Italian the cassettes also seem to come from Italy and include artists like Colonne Sonore, Renato Zero and Aldo Varini. Yeah, I’ve never heard of any of them either but I think that adds to the coolness factor here. The Cassette Wallets are available from designboom for $32 each but it seems the site is sold out at the moment. [ Retro Cassette Wallets ] VIA [ Josh Spear ]

Filed under: Handsets, Others, ATT-Cingular, GSM, CDMA Just over a fortnight after deploying UMTS 900, Alcatel is now announcing that we Americans better get prepared for an absolute onslaught of phones right here in the US market. The 20 phone lineup is being dubbed a “spring lineup of fashion phones” that are reportedly quite the “chic and stylish” bunch. While there wasn’t much detail on the specification end, we do know that the handsets will sport “soft-touch plastics, a leather-like finish, and design touches like dots of liquid metal.” Of course, the ladies should appreciate the already-promised floral offerings, and those eying a low- to mid-range phone should find at least one option that suits their fancy. Among the barrage will be flavors that sport a 1.3-megapixel camera, 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, dedicated music controls, and support for 1GB TransFlash cards to boot. Currently, the outfit is already working to get its GSM handsets approved by AT&T, and the CDMA phones should be good to go on several “smaller regional carriers,” hopefully by May of this year.

Looks like we’re going bone conduction crazy – next up is Julie Strietelmeier’s review of the Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth Headset.  You might remember the Jawbone from the tail-end of last year; while it looks like a normal headset, albeit a particularly stylish one, it actually picks up sound conducted through your jaw rather than relying solely on a traditional microphone. The promise is far better sound quality, which is exactly what Julie set out to test…

Historically museums could be confusing, distant places; if you didn’t have knowledge of what you were looking it, or were unable to decipher the oddly-phrased explanation cards, then you could spend much of your time walking round indecently puzzled about everything. That all changed with the introduction of wireless audio guides, giving people a personal tour of exhibitions with all the supplementary information and explanations they could need. Of course, what’s suited for inside a weather-proof, contained gallery is less ideal for an outdoor attraction; that’s where artist Markus Kison comes in.

I had high hopes for the Sidekick ID. It looked like it would take the strengths of the SK3 (look for a review of the UK version here on SlashGear very soon!) and package them in a smaller, more dedicated handset. Perhaps something that executives and business folk wouldn’t feel embarrassed to whip out in a meeting and peck at; after all, that keyboard is one of the best around. But they seem to have decided to give it the cellphone equivalent of lycra running shorts.
A prematurely published rebate form on the T-Mobile US site spills the colourful beans, as well as news that the parred-down messenger will cost a reasonable $99 after a $50 rebate. Expect it to drop on April 18th. © 2007 SlashGear, Posted by Chris Davies on Fri, March 30th. | Want more on these topics ?
