Filed under: Misc For a good percentage of chatters in these parts, roaming is very rarely a concern; modern rate plans have been constructed in such a way that even if you are roaming from time to time, you don't notice -- not even when your bill arrives. For Europeans, though, you can imagine that roaming might suck, seeing how you've got all those countries in pretty tight quarters. The European Union met recently in an effort to agree on caps for international roaming rates (and whether consumers should automatically be moved to the new pricing structures), but -- surprise, surprise -- representatives came away empty-handed. At issue seems to be the fact that the European Parliament wants rates capped at 40 euro cents (about $0.54) per minute for making calls and 15 euro cents (about $0.20) for receiving them, while constituent nations are gunning for something a little higher. Carriers, naturally, don't want hard caps at all, citing the stifling effect they'll allegedly have on infrastructure development, but at any rate, the EU's getting back together on May 2 to have another go at the negotiations. Good luck, guys! [Via textually.org] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If you find the thickness of a Vertu positively offensive -- but the Sony Ericsson W880i isn't quite exclusive enough for you -- might we recommend a golden rendition of the same? A phone customization outfit, Amosu, is offering said golden W880i for a mere £569 (about $1135). The catch? Turns out the handset is merely plated in the precious stuff, which means you're really not getting a heck of a lot of gold for the surcharge. Finding a yellow Ai any other way is gonna be a challenge, though, so spend the dinero if you must. [Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog and E24.se] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sometimes I wish that I had been born a few years later than I was. The younger generation gets so much cool stuff that we didn’t get.

I’ve shown you how to make a wireless NES controller for your Wii, but if you were more of a Sega fan back in the day, I’ve got a new one for you.

The guys over at Cre.ations have converted an old Sega Genesis controller so that it will work with your Wii. This one is definitely not for the feint of heart.

Not too long we covered one of Corsair’s upcoming flash drives that touted its ability to withstand just about anything. Today they have released the Flash Survivor.
These tough little drives are built from heavy-duty aluminum with a rubber collar to help in shock-absorption. The drive is also well-sealed in the event that it is submerged in water.

Samsung announced that it has begun manufacturing 16Gb NAND flash chips based on a 51-nanometer process.
Couple this with their new multilevel cell structure and they can create flash drives with up to 16GB on a single memory card. As these become more readily available, we will likely begin seeing more phones come out with larger storage capacities than before. Take the upcoming iPhone for example; it will be touting 4GB and 8GB hard drives when it makes its debut in June.

There have been anecdotal cases of BlackBerry users so engrossed in pecking out tiny takeover bids on their handheld cellular demons that they fail to notice slightly more important real-world issues such as open manholes, fast-moving juggernauts and one-way streets. Now I’m not saying that navigation software would solve all of those issues, but a one-third improvement isn’t bad; that’s surely the argument Navizon are making, with their clever cellular triangulation mapping.

Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS Hutchison 3's flagship "X-Series" platform of data-enabled goodies is missing a pretty critical piece of the puzzle -- Windows Mobile support -- but it now looks like the carrier plans to add it with a bang. Despite seeing a Vodafone-branded unit some time ago, MoDaCo reports that 3 is positioning itself to pick up a period of exclusivity on the upcoming Motorola Q9h (exclusivity which we assume will be limited to the UK, or perhaps Europe) to launch Windows Mobile support for X-Series. Of course, once 3 has bothered to gather all the apps necessary to take X-Series to the Microsoft camp, it only stands to reason that the Q9h will become just the first in a line of Windows Mobile phones to rock it, so if you're on 3 and the Q9h isn't quite your cup of tea (we can't blame you), sit tight.
