If you asked me what game I’m most looking forward to this summer, it would have to be Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The game has so many cool things going for it, as you get to use the Force in ways never even heard of in the Star Wars universe. Just the thought of playing as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice brings back the kind of excitement I haven’t felt for a Star Wars title since SOE ruined Galaxies. Anyway, hit the jump for an awesome video that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the physics engines behind the game.
Basically you have three different physics engines working at any given point. First you have the Havok which is the underlying engine that allows them to control a vast amount of objects at once. Then comes Euphoria which takes care of your AI, which takes fighting enemies to a whole new level. NPCs will actually react differently depending on the surroundings and how they were attacked. They talk about using the Force to levitate someone, and they’ll actually grab onto nearby objects to try and regain control, or they’ll duck when something is thrown at them. No two reactions will ever be the same, so every encounter will be unique.
Finally the DMM engine actually controls each object on a molecular level. It thinks of every object not as just a crate or a tree, but as the a collection of molecules. This lets glass objects shatter, wood to splinter, trees to sway and bend naturally and even allows objects to interact based on mass and velocity. If this game turns out even half as well as it looks, I’ll be one happy Star Wars fan.

If there was one gaming franchise that was the most notorious for getting people like Jack Thompson up in arms over excessive violence and such, it would be Grand theft Auto. Sure, the first two games passed by mostly unnoticed, however, Grand Theft Auto III and subsequent titles have earned the hatred of parents everywhere. On that wonderful note, I’m happy to inform you that Grand Theft Auto IV now has an official release date.
We’re still a couple months away from the big launch, but April 29th will be here before you know it. Of course, two months gives people like Jack Thompson plenty of time to market the game to the entire country. He will no doubt make some kind of big deal out of it, regardless of the fact that he’s not allowed to take any action against Rockstar Games.
I for one am looking forward to this game. If it only provides me with a similar experience as I’ve come to expect from the franchise, I’ll be happy. I don’t doubt that it will keep me entertained with its increased amounts of sex, violence and all-around crudeness. Yes, people will argue that these sorts of games desensitise the youth of this country to violent acts and even encourage them. I completely disagree, as I can’t even remember the last time I beat up a hooker, dumped her off and stole her cash.

I’ll have to say that one of my favorite times as a gamer was when the Nintendo 64 hit the scene. I was still in school back then, and over the summer I had nothing but time to kill. Thus I spent most of my waking hours playing Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Zelda and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Turok is one of those games that I really didn’t expect to enjoy, and thus surprised me. Unfortunately the sequels haven’t quite filled me with the same experience as the original. I’m hoping that the latest installment doesn’t disappoint like the previous title.
If you weren’t jaded by the failure of Turok: Evolution, then there’s a chance that you may be considering preordering the latest sequel simply titled Turok. Like many games, you’ll get a little something extra for being so eager that you’ll actually pay for the game before receiving it. Depending on where you go, you’ll get something different.
A preorder at Best Buy will net you a Turok beanie, GameStop is giving you a T-Shirt, Game Crazy has Turok Claw Necklaces and a trip to Walmart will result in a new Turok skin for your Xbox 360. The game comes out on February 5th, so you’ll want to hit one of those stores in the next few days to get your swag.
The upside: it’s lower in cholesterol than real toast with real butter. The downside: you can’t eat it. I mean, unless you really want to. Post-it notes and butter both sold separately; you can have the toast pad for $7.50.
I’m pretty sure that if you’ve saved up the cash to buy yourself a PS3 then you’re going to want the whole experience, and thus you’ll want a DualShock SIXAXIS controller. However, if you don’t feel like ponying up another $70 just to get that rumbling sensation (which should have been in all of the controllers to begin with) you have another option. Albeit a strange one.
Of course, by strange I do mean, big, ugly and unappealing. So much for my grace and tact. The small black thing you see on the left actually clips onto the bottom of your SIXAXIS controller, and provides you with the wonderful vibration that your hands have sorely missed. The other small box (with the huge antenna) plugs into one of the USB ports on your PS3.
Sure, when you hook this up it will make both your controller and console look completely ridiculous, but it’s not all bad. You get an FM tuner, which I’m sure someone might find interesting, were this the mid-90’s. The only real upside is that it only costs around $18 bucks. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my hard-earned cash on one.
