Circuit City reveals Cobalt Blue Nintendo DS Lite
Posted by MobiG @ 4:45 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo changed their motto for the DS to “Gotta Catch ‘Em All.” While it’s always cool to see some of my favorite gadgets in a multitude of colors, I’m beginning to wonder how long Nintendo is going to stretch out the release of all of these colors. The latest rumor is that we’ll be seeing a Cobalt Blue/Black DS Lite sometime in the near future.

Cobalt Blue DS Lite

If you recall, the DS was originally released in 8 different colors, which eventually gave way to the DS Lite. I’ve actually lost track of the number of colors available in the various regions over time. Then you have to take into account the Limited Edition versions such as those released for Final Fantasy III and Phantom Hourglass. In all, I’d guess there are about four hundred different colors, bundles, special editions and configurations for the DS.

This latest rumor comes from the Circuit City page which showed the Cobalt DS Lite as being available soon. The new blue DS was listed for the regular $130 price. I suspect it will be only a short time before we hear some sort of official announcement on this one.

Gomboc Is World’s First Self-Righting Object

Gomboc

By Evan Ackerman

You don’t think about it much, but generally, when stuff falls over, it doesn’t get back up. Off the top of my head, I can think of two exceptions to the rule: Weebles, and turtles. Of course, Weebles (and most other self-righting objects) cheat by having a weight in the bottom. The Gomboc, “invented” last December by Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi, is the first convex, homogeneous object with only one stable orientation, which means that it’ll always turn itself “up” no matter which way you set it down, without any help:

Turtles, though, seem to have had this figured out a while ago… Quite a few of them have shells shaped nearly identically to the Gomboc. As for practical uses for those of us who aren’t turtles, I honestly don’t know what this is good for. How about a cake mold, to make self-righting pineapple upside-down cake? Yeah, okay, got nothin’. It’s definitely cool, though.

If you want to order one, they’re available in a limited edition starting at about 1000 euros. Or you could just go find a turtle somewhere.

Disney Mobile rises from ashes to invade Japan
Posted by MobiG @ 4:31 am

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again — preferably on a different continent. That’s the attitude Disney is taking with its Disney Mobile MVNO, shutting down its poorly-received US service and heading over to Japan where Softbank is serving up the necessary airwaves this time around. The target demo is decidedly different now, too — whereas the US service was aimed at families with young kiddies, the Japanese rendition is targeting women in their 20s and 30s, seen as prime consumers of Disney content. The first handset to support Disney Mobile will be the DM001SH, a reworked version of Sharp’s 821SH for Softbank that features 3G data, a 2 megapixel cam, 400 x 240 internal and 60 x 32 external displays, one-seg mobile TV, FeliCa, and no shortage of Mickey Mouse branding. All told, we’d say it’s just a tad hotter than the carrier’s now-deceased US offerings. Look for the service to launch March 1.
