Gaming accessories headed to iPhone (maybe with buttons!)
Posted by Gizzie @ 10:56 am

Undeniably, Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch have become major players in the mobile gaming market. It seems like every developer under the sun is working on iPhone / iPod game of some kind. There are lots of games out there, and a rising number of them are pretty good, but the iPhone / iPod has thus far been devoid of another major aspect of the game industry: Third-party peripherals. Until now, that is. With the release of iPhone 3.0 firmware, Apple now mentions “Third-party Game Accessories” on the iPod Touch software update page.

The iPod and iPhone already have a huge accessories market, and we’re sure that there are plenty of companies looking to carve a new niche with gaming accessories. There are no details regarding what sorts of accessories are on the way, but we’d say some more traditional input devices are a pretty safe bet.

We’ll tell you one thing, we can’t wait to see what Nyko has cooking.

Interview: Tecmo’s Keisuke Kikuchi and Red Entertainment’s Naoki Morita on Nostalgia
Posted by Gizzie @ 10:56 am

Tecmo’s Nostalgeo no Kaze, being localized as Nostalgia by Ignition Entertainment, is a fantasy RPG set in a fictionalized version of our own world in the late 19th century. In this steampunk-inspired world, a young man named Eddy searches for legendary treasures, traveling around the world … on his zeppelin.

During E3, we had the opportunity to speak briefly with producer Keisuke Kikuchi (best known for creating Fatal Frame) and director Naoki Morita (known for his work on Sega’s Sakura Taisen series, which is finally coming to North America) about the inspiration behind the fanciful Nintendo DS RPG, and about life after the Tecmo-Koei merger.

DiRT 2 tips its hat to the late Colin McRae
Posted by Gizzie @ 10:56 am

When Scottish rally racer Colin McRae died in a tragic helicopter accident in September 2007, many wondered how his passing would affect the final version of DiRT, the McRae-branded racing game that would come out later that month. The answer? Well, it was too late in the game’s development to include any significant changes — but Codemasters is making sure that the upcoming sequel to the well-reviewed racer adequately tips its hat to the driver who spawned the series.

MTV Multiplayer checked out DiRT 2 during a recent preview in NYC, and reports that players will be working to qualify for the Colin McRae Memorial Cup — what’s more, Codemasters’ Mark Turosz explained that players will “hear other drivers talking about him,” and that “he’s the central figure in the narrative.” Rarely do video games dabble in real-life tragedies — though it looks like Codemasters is handling it with a refreshing touch of class.

Future US president calls it quits
Posted by Gizzie @ 10:56 am

Yes, 12-year-old Billy Caruthers, projected winner of the 2036 presidential election has decided to resign from his pending office in order to dodge controversy surrounding his pending extramarital affair. He — oh, wait. We totally misread that headline. The president of magazine publisher Future US, Jonathan Simpson-Bint, is stepping down August 31 in order to start up his own business. Simpson-Bint has been working with the company for 18 years, and oversaw the launch of PSM, IGN.com and DailyRadar.com.

Future is currently looking for Simpson-Bint’s replacement — if you’ve got experience managing humongous publishing companies, yet find yourself working as a lowly fry cook at your local Carl’s Jr., perhaps its time you gained some upward mobility.
