Samsung Corby Speed breaks new ground for odd phone names
Posted by MobiG @ 5:22 pm

We still think “Corby” alone is an odd name for a phone, but Samsung liked it enough to spin it into a whole low-cost series. Today, that series grew another notch with the introduction of the Corby Speed, which sounds more like a comic book hero (or possibly an overrated Olympic slalom skier with GQ good looks) than it does a modest touchscreen handset. It looks a whole lot like some of the other Corbys you may have seen out there, but the key difference here is that we’ve got Open Mobile-compliant CDMA on board, meaning the phone can be toted among India’s CDMA carriers much as you would an unlocked GSM set. It’s got a 2 megapixel cam, FM radio, 2.8-inch display, and your choice of three “fashion jackets” — black, white, and yellow — and if you’re interested, you can nab it for 10,300 rupees (about $223) as long as you’re willing to make the trek to South Asia.

Mophie set to unveil Credit Card Reader
Posted by MobiG @ 5:15 pm

I have owned a couple iPhones now and for each model I have owned I have a Mophie Juice Pack to keep its battery running longer. My favorite is the thin Juice Pack Air for my 3GS iPhone. Mophie is set to unveil another hardware accessory for the iPhone that looks a lot like the Juice Pack Air that is actually a credit card reader.

iphone gets credit card reader 0 540x302

The device is apparently called simply enough the Credit Card Reader and is a much more integrated looking device than that ugly Square mobile payment accessory that plugs into the headphone jack. The device will work with a third party app that actually handles the processing.

As interesting as these card readers are, it worries me how easy it is becoming for nefarious types to steal our credit card data. I had my card info stolen recently from a local business and the crook used the number to order ladies clothes online. I get a little twinge each time the waiter at a restaurant leaves with my card and this sort of tech just makes that twinge worse for me.

Something Tells Me This Person Isn’t Getting Their Duke Nukem Forever Pre-Order Filled

Duke Nukem Forever Game Stop Pre-Order Receipt (Image courtesy imgur)
By Andrew Liszewski

I found this photo of someone’s Game Stop Duke Nukem Forever pre-order receipt rather amusing. It appears to be dated August 2001, and as you can clearly see the years have left it a bit yellowed, faded and if I’m not mistaken, even a little sad looking. I wonder if they’ve got a pre-order for the Gizmondo or the Phantom console lying around too?

Stanley LED Torch Watch is the ugliest watch ever
Posted by MobiG @ 5:02 pm

I have seen some ugly watches in my day and I have owned a few. In my defense, most of the really ugly watches I have owned where when I was young. I once got a massive calculator watch out of a gumball machine when I was eight. I wore it for months before I broke it. It was huge, ugly, and infinitely better looking that this weird watch from Stanley.

The Stanley LED Torch Watch is on a yellow and black band that secures to the wrist with a Velcro strap. It looks like something that your carpenter would wear while crawling around in the attic. It has an alarm, backlight, timer, and a LED flashlight.

The face of the watch is 60mm x 35mm x 22mm and it sells for $58. The flashlight is not removable; presumably, you shine it around by pointing your hand Spider Man style. Ladies if your man orders one of these, kick him in his boy parts.

LEGO’s First Official iPhone App Isn’t What You’d Expect, But Is Still Pretty Neat

LEGO iPhone App (Images courtesy Gizmodo)
By Andrew Liszewski

The mere mention of an official iPhone LEGO app might make you excited about building virtual police cars and pirate ships during your commute in the morning, but I’m afraid you’ll have to put those dreams on hold. LEGO’s first venture into mobile apps is actually a photography program that will pixelate any photo you take, or shots already in your iPhone’s Photo Library. Tapping a LEGO-ized photo also refreshes the color palette of the bricks being used if you’re not happy with the apps first conversion attempt, and the modified shots can be saved out to your Photo Library once you’re pleased with the results. Free from the iTunes App Store, available right now.

Liquid Image announces model 312 wide angle videomask
Posted by MobiG @ 4:47 pm

I’m not a scuba diver but I have been snorkeling and can appreciate the appeal of diving in clear water of the Caribbean and other places around the world. Those of you who are divers probably have wished you could share some of what you see with those of us who don’t dive. Liquid Image has a line of scuba masks that let you take pictures and shoot video under water.

By Andrew Liszewski

With 200 MB/s read and 170 MB/s write speeds, A-DATA’s new N002 flash drive makes a convincing argument to upgrade to USB 3.0. But if you’re not ready to take the bleeding edge plunge just yet, the drive is also equipped with a SATA II connection and is even backwards with USB 2.0, though you’ll be taking a bit of a speed hit there. A-DATA claims the drive will be hitting the market sometime in January of 2010 and will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities, though pricing information has not been announced yet.

Team unveils USB 2.0/eSATA X092 flash drive
Posted by MobiG @ 4:05 pm

teamox92 sgSeveral new dual interface flash drives have been unveiled recently and many of them are sporting USB 3.0 connectivity. Team has announced its new dual format flash drive that sports eSATA but uses older USB 2.0 tech rather than the new speedier interface.

The Team X092 USB diskFire shadow needs no power adapter getting all its juice from the USB port. The maker uses quadruple channel technology to write to four storage devices inside the drive case at one time for faster performance.

Team promises the drive is good for 110MB/sec read speed and 40MB/sec write speed when connected via eSATA. At those speeds, it takes 42 seconds to copy a 4.5GB movie file. The drive will be offered in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models. Pricing is unannounced at this time.
