Today Hitachi-LG Data Storage Inc. officially announced their new HyDrives, designed for laptops and compact PCs, which incorporate a 32GB or 64GB SSD into a CD/DVD optical drive. The obvious benefit to such a setup is that you can have a dual drive configuration in a mid-sized laptop, with the fast SSD for your OS and applications, and a large regular hard drive for media and other content. Now according to Engadget, the first generation of the HyDrives, which should be available come August, will actually be 12.7mm thick which means they won’t fit in most laptops, relegating them for use in compact desktop PCs and HTPCs. But the second generation, which will hopefully be available by March of next year, will have a smaller 9.5mm form factor making them usable in a wide range of laptops, as well as increased capacities of up to 256GB. Specific pricing info wasn’t announced today, probably because the drives will only be available to OEMs at launch, but a ~$200 premium was quoted for systems featuring one of the new HyDrives. Apple have announced their latest iPad sales figures, and the tablet’s international debut last week has helped topple another milestone figure. Two million iPads have been sold in under 60 days, since the slate’s launch in the US on April 3rd.
Apple had previously confirmed that they sold over one million iPads back on May 3rd, less than a month after the tablet had hit US shelves. According to the Cupertino company’s press release, there are still issues with meeting consumer demand; “We appreciate [would-be buyers] patience,” Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, is quoted as saying, “and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.” Unlike the first announcement, Apple have not provided an update on the number of iPad apps downloaded or indeed the number of iBooks titles downloaded. It doesn’t come with a built-in backup battery, or a solar charger, but the Seat Buddy could be one of the most useful silicone iPhone/iPod Touch cases on the market. The only thing that makes it look even remotely distinct from other cases on the market is the pair of rubber straps sticking out of one side, which can be used to hang it from the back of a car or airplane seat’s headrest, the top of a treadmill, a glove compartment or anywhere you can secure them. It can pretty much be used anywhere, and an included set of velcro pieces allows the straps to be attached to each other so you don’t necessarily have to use it in a place where the straps are clamped down. The SeatBuddy was apparently invented by an airline pilot who could never find the perfect position for watching movies on his iPhone, hopefully not while on duty, and they’re available on the company’s website for ~$24 each with shipping, but the more you buy, the cheaper it gets. As strange as the HyDrive product sounds, the idea behind it actually makes a lot of sense. The first generation of HyDrives will be available with 32GB or 64GB of storage. Next year a version of the HyDrive with 256GB of SSD storage inside will be unveiled. In addition to having storage space inside the optical drive, the device will be able to read and write to CDs and DVDs. Moving the SSD storage inside the optical drive allows the designers of netbooks and notebooks to use the space traditionally needed for storage inside the machine chassis for other needs or to design thinner devices. The first generation HyDrive will be offered on future EeeTop nettops from Asus and the HyDrive will debut globally inside the Asus N61DA notebook. Relevant Entries on SlashGear

I would hope that no one here in the US or really anywhere would try to carry this iPhone case out in public and actually use it. I can see you being shot by the police as you try to answer your phone. The case has the handle that looks like a revolver.
The iPhone slips into the square holder of the iPhone Revolver and the whole works is designed to be slipped down the front or back of your pants. When you go to answer your iPhone, you grab the pistol handle and whip the phone out. The case was built by a guy going by juniortan on Thingiverse. The builder designed the case and then printed it using a 3D printer. Once all the parts where printed for the 3D printer they were assembled with epoxy and crazy glue. The handle of the case is based on the Ruger LCR Revolver according to the builder. This thing is certainly cool, but not safe at all. Relevant Entries on SlashGear

We have already talked about Nokia’s MeeGo OS on a few occasions. Last week we learned that MeeGo v1.0 for netbooks and the Nokia N900 smartphone had launched. Nokia is expecting MeeGo to be adopted by other manufactures wince the OS is offered as an open source option for devices.
The Inquirer has sat down with Nokia VP Alberto Torres for a chat about MeeGo and the first Nokia devices to run the new OS. Strangely, with MeeGo being an OS under development in partnership between Nokia and Intel, the first Nokia device to use MeeGo will run an ARM chip. The Inquirer reports that MeeGo isn’t for Intel Atom chips, which as a commenter below points out isn’t exactly accurate. The first Nokia product to use MeeGo will land later this year and will be aimed at rich multimedia use. Relevant Entries on SlashGear
