Rogers HTC Magic+ 2.1 update almost ready for prime time
Posted by MobiG @ 4:57 am

Early this year Rogers announced — to some seriously upset owners — there would be no Android update for the HTC Dream and HTC Magic. Shortly after there was a flip flop followed by an exchange program, which resulted in bags of smiles for all. Well, the final steps of that process are underway as Rogers announced today it has completed the Android 2.1 update testing for the HTC Magic+ ( it was renamed to Magic+ with its first firmware overhaul that included Sense ) and has sent it to Google for thumbs-up and eventual HTC OTA launch. The only catch is your Magic+ has to be running the newer Rogers firmware with Sense — but fear not, they’ll get you into a Rogers store to help you out with the update if you need it. Sadly still no firm timeline, but we’d say this glorious news should keep you busy ’til that fateful day.

Motorola Milestone to get Android 2.2 in Europe and Korea in late Q4, Dext 2.1 upgrade looking bleak
Posted by MobiG @ 1:38 am

Until now, Milestone owners could do nothing but to envy Droid users rocking the Froyo upgrade; however, according to Motorola’s recently published timeline, the former device is now slated for the same dessert party in Europe and Korea in Q4 — specifically, “beginning at the end of this year,” which could well mean the majority of users won’t get the update until 2011 (!). Meanwhile, said upgrade is still “under evaluation” for Canada, Latin America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific sans Korea.

But here’s the real heartbreaking news from the same chart: unlike their American counterparts, the Dext and Backflip will not be getting an Eclair update in Europe, Latin American and Mexico, while Canada and Asia-Pacific still have a glimpse of hope. Sure, it’s not like Motorola’s earlier timeline laid any concrete details for the European Dext, but there was definitely a date for the Latin America flavor. What concerns us the most is that back in January, Motorola did make a promise — which has since been deleted but forever cached by Google — to its European fans on Facebook: “[the] Dext will get the Android 2.1 upgrade as well.” We have the full shameful statement after the break.

In case you still care, other devices mentioned in the timeline include the US-only Devour (no 2.1 update), Cliq XT / Quench (2.1 in late Q3 / early Q4; under evaluation for Canada and Asia-Pacific), Droid X (Froyo upgrade in late summer, which we knew), Motoroi and Titanium (2.2 in Q4 in Korea for both). If you’re still mourning over the canned update for your Dext, let us remind you that there’s no stopping you from updating your Android slider manually; alternatively, there’s no harm in sending Sanjay a nice postcard, either.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Miraculously, the offending Facebook status link is now back online…

Dell: Streak likely going straight to Froyo in US
Posted by MobiG @ 8:23 pm

Though it’s really quite a capable handset, Dell’s Streak brought several disappointments to its belated US launch; namely, a pastry-based OS without any creme filling, and a $549 version that’s still SIM-locked. While we doubt AT&T’s iron grip will release the Streak from the latter servitude, Dell’s Lionel Menchaca suggests that the former problem may get solved all at once, because the company is considering skipping Android 2.1 altogether for stateside Streaks and upgrading them directly to the faster, more capable Android 2.2. We don’t have a timeframe for a potential release, of course, as the device just went on sale, but it’s clear that Dell hears your cries for the functionality Froyo brings.

Motorola Flipout makes North American debut with a Rogers exclusive
Posted by MobiG @ 4:47 am

In another case of Canadians getting things ahead of their southerly neighbors, the Motorola Flipout has made its journey across the Atlantic and settled on Rogers as its first North American carrier. 3-year contractual commitments will be greeted with a lowly C$30 charge for the phone, or if you can’t bear the thought of being locked in for so long, you can buy the flipping thing outright for C$375. As a quick reminder, the Flipout runs on Google’s Android 2.1 OS, but embellishes things a little with a freshened up variety of the Motoblur UI. If that, together with the “hip to be square” form factor, sounds like your slice of pie, we suggest you head on over to the source link and put those Canadian Dollars to good use.

[Thanks, CoconutCheez]

Motorola Sage pictured in glorious detail, on a collision course with AT&T
Posted by MobiG @ 5:24 pm

Confirming our FCC-inspired conjecture, here we have a gallery of pictures giving us a detailed look at Motorola’s latest (though probably not greatest) Android handset. Just as we posited, this QWERTY slider is bound for AT&T’s airwaves and it comes with a Motoblur 2 skin, as seen most recently on the Droid X. We keep telling these manufacturers that bone stock Android and a rapid upgrade cycle would be preferable but they don’t listen. You’ll have to make do with Android 2.1 when the Sage launches, which can’t be too far off from now given that our tipster has had his test unit for a good month already.

[Thanks, Charlie W.]

Dell shows off Android 2.1 running on the Streak, still planning to make it to Froyo
Posted by MobiG @ 7:19 pm

Dell’s Kevin Andrew answered a few questions about the Streak in a new “vlog” on YouTube, and it’s a mixture of encouragement and confusion. On the good side, Kevin showed off Android 2.1 up and running on the phone / tablet / lady-killer. It looks just like 2.1, of course, but with Dell’s customizations still riding atop it. Oddly, while showing off 2.1, Kevin reassures us that Dell is still planning to go to Froyo (2.2), which is reiterated by the text below the video, with no clarification if 2.1 will actually be released as an intermediate measure. Either way we don’t have a timeline, which is pretty much the same tune we hear with every Android handset. In other news, Dell is planning to launch the cherry red version of the streak “shortly” after the international launch of the graphite model — which might be as soon as tomorrow (Dell’s site still says “late July,” but they just wrapped up a 24 hour pre-sale and said to check back tomorrow, possibly just for more pre-sales). Check out the video after the break.

[Thanks, James H.]

Update: Matt at Dell (conveniently tweeting under the pseudonym @mattatdell) has clarified that the Streak is not going to be released this week. That seems odd, since that vague “late July” window ends this week, but hopefully we’ll know more soon.

Mario live wallpaper for Android: better than a Tanooki Suit in the summer
Posted by MobiG @ 6:03 am

Seriously, words cannot describe how incredibly entertained we are by this Mario Live wallpaper for Android 2.1 and above devices. All across the home and locked screen, our favorite Italian faux-plumber protagonist runs through randomly-generated levels across various themes like outside, underground, and castle. It’s very customizable, allowing you to change the level’s difficulty, see the alternate paths Mario’s AI has plotted, and rendering the background (all at a cost to CPUs and battery life, of course). Free download — donations suggested, of course — and if you’re looking for a way to stare at your phone even longer, well, look no further. Videos through which you can live vicariously are after the break.

Metro PCS to join Android game with a Motorola QWERTY slider
Posted by MobiG @ 2:29 am

A four-row sliding QWERTY keyboard? Check. Metro PCS splash screen? Check. Motorola insignia? You better believe it. The folks at AndroidGuys have obtained what very strongly appears to be Metro PCS’ first Android phone, and along with a handful of pics there’s some alleged specs, too. From the man (or woman) behind the curtain: a 600MHz processor, 3 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1 with Motoblur dressing. An EVO 4G combatant it is definitely not — nor ever intended to be — but we wouldn’t be surprised if the price turned more than a few heads. Any indication of price, release date, or even official name is, however, still a mystery.

Sprint’s Hero finally gets official Android 2.1 upgrade
Posted by MobiG @ 3:06 pm

Assuming you resisted the temptation to either root your Hero or update it with the recently leaked 2.1 firmware, this is your very first chance to finally slap a dash of Android future on your senescent device. Sprint has at long last made the update available, though it isn’t quite yet ready to download from its site. Fear not, the good folks behind the yellow network have put together a guide on upgrading through your phone and we’ll link up the download as soon as it’s ready for consumption. Time to start enjoying that Google Maps Navigation magic and all the other goodies constituting Eclair‘s delectable filling.

Update: It’s now available direct from HTC’s website, as well as Sprint’s own site. Thanks, all!

[Thanks, Jonathan]

Motorola Flipout spotted: an Android 2.1 / Motoblur device with a twist
Posted by MobiG @ 10:33 am

Remember “Square Motorola Android slider?” Ah, those were the days. The little twister’s returned, this time with much greater clarity and a new name. Meet Flipout. According to Gizmodo Brazil, we’re looking at Android 2.1 with a dash of Motoblur thrown into the mix, a 2.8-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, 700MHz processor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, GPS, and a 3.1 megapixel camera. The HSPA phone is expected in the states this June in at least three different colors — black, green, and pink. Backflip, Flipout… one can only hope Motorola keeps the trend alive with a Soundgarden-themed solar phone, the Outshined.
