Samsung Introduces Foldable 3D TV Concept
Posted by MobiG @ 6:32 am

By Colin Ackerman

I know what you’re thinking: why would anyone, anywhere, ever want a foldable TV if it doesn’t fit in your pocket, which this concept definitely doesn’t? Samsung says that by folding (or “flexing” might be more accurate) their display, they can target the 3D sweet spot to viewers anywhere in the room. My guess is that the TV would have some way of detecting the general distance and orientation to viewers, and then the screen (an AMOLED panel) would flex to optimize the 3D experience.

Samsung says that something like this might show up in 5-10 years, but it seems like that’s going to be way, way too late to solve the 3D sweetspot issue, which is just one of the many problems plaguing 3D TV. If you remember, 3D TV was one of the things being flogged last year at CES, and it seems like this year is probably going to be no different, no matter how reluctant consumers might be to buy into the questionable hype.

Samsung Mobile Display Shows Off Flexible 3D OLED Concept at FPD International
Posted by MobiG @ 8:54 pm

When it comes to AMOLED and Super AMOLED, the display technology is synonymous with Samsung. But Samsung doesn’t want to just focus on the here-and-now. They’ve already shown off what a 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED would look like, so why wouldn’t the company show off a concept design of what it would look like to see that technology on a bigger screen? That’s exactly what they did at this year’s FPD International.

Samsung is starting to show that, here in the near future, one market they will be focusing on is going to be the foldable and flexible. Especially when it comes to consumer electronics. They took some time out of their busy schedule to showcase what they believe the next stage of home entertainment will look like. Their idea, is that you should be able to enjoy your 3D entertainment wherever you are in the living room, thanks to your TV being folded in a particular way.

Samsung is also going to push for their future-tech 3DTVs to range in sizes, so you don’t just have to enjoy it in your living room. We don’t see this happening in the next year or so, but we do see Samsung having a lot of cool things to show off in the next few years. We can certainly hope we’ve got some foldable, flexible TVs to look forward to in the future.

HTC job listing hints at an E Ink / 3D-filled future, new North Carolina facility
Posted by MobiG @ 10:02 am

Months back, word on the street had it that HTC was looking to grab up emptied space in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park post-recession; huge outfits like Nortel bit the bullet in 2009, while Sony Ericsson shuttered its operations there and relocated to Atlanta. Naturally, the consolidation paved the way for other technology firms to slide in without overpaying for real estate. HTC has remained mum on the prospect of expansion, but it’s fairly obvious what’s in mind given the multiple job listings that have just emerged for a heretofore unannounced facility in RTP. Of particular importance is a plea for a Display and Camera Design Engineer — HTC is asking that whoever applies for the role have some level of “familiarity with 3D display and imaging technologies,” not to mention “familiarity with multiple display technologies (TFT-LCD, PMOLED, AMOLED, E-ink, etc.).” Of course, we’ve seen quite a few bullet points in our years that end up meaning nothing at all, but it definitely gets our gears turning. Could HTC be working on a reader / tablet that would at least partially rely on e-paper? Are we destined to see a 3D Android device from the outfit at Mobile World Congress 2011? Imaginations, here’s the part where you run wild.

AMOLED panel firms actively developing more capacity
Posted by MobiG @ 4:17 pm

Some popular smartphones have seen shortages based on components and if those smartphones use AMOLED screens, that screen is often the main component that isn’t available in enough capacity. There are several companies investing heavily in AMOLED manufacturing and the supply of panels will grow moving into 2011.

DigiTimes reports that makers in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea are all actively developing the AMOLED online market with more capacity. Samsung Mobile Display is one of the firms that is building capacity and will account for 90% of the total AMOLED panel market in 2010. SMD is set to start building panels at its new 5.5G plan.

Taiwanese AMOLED makers like AU Optronics will take some of the current market share from SMD according to DigiTimes with AMOLED screens coming from pair of 3.5G factories and a 4.5G factory. AU Optronics may also move another of its 4G plants or even one of the 6G plants over to AMOLED production in the near future to increase production capacity. More capacity is a good thing since it means more screens, less shortages, and lower prices.

Samsung Super AMOLED production up 10x in 2011 as company posts record small display profit
Posted by MobiG @ 2:03 pm

Samsung Mobile Display is reporting the highest operating profit margin of display manufacturers worldwide, according to Etnews, with the company’s Super AMOLED primarily responsible for the sale success. In Q3 2010, SMD saw sales worth 1.272 trillion won ($900m), with a 10.5-percent operating margin. Meanwhile, supplies of AMOLED panels are set to grow vastly from May 2011, when Samsung’s new production line starts up.

At that point, Samsung’s current output of around 3m small-size AMOLED displays per month will increase exponentially to 30m such panels, vastly increasing supply and hopefully preventing the sort of shortages we saw earlier in 2010. Then, manufacturers like HTC were forced to switch to alternative technologies for their smartphone screens, such as Sony’s Super LCD, when AMOLED was scarce.

Samsung is crediting the Galaxy S and its stable of US variants for helping drive Super AMOLED demand and awareness. The company recently showed off a new, 7-inch panel using the technology, and which is expected to make it inside a refreshed Galaxy Tab in 2011.

AMOLED shortage to become a surplus in 2011

AMOLED shortage to become a surplus in 2011

Samsung’s beautiful Super AMOLED panels are becoming more and more common in mobile devices, but they’re not as common as they could be if there were more of the things flying out of Samsung Mobile Display factories. Predictably that’s set to change in 2011, with SMD planning to fulfill its promise and bring another production facility online, while other competitors in Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore will ramp up their own AMOLED facilities in the coming year. Meanwhile, China is said to be working on its OLED supply chain as well, meaning those displays of the passive matrix variety will also be flying off of assembly lines soon. So, 2011 may still not be the year of a chicken in every pot, but it could be the year of glowy organic goo in every smartphone.

4.3-inch Samsung Stealth V SCH-i510 Froyo smartphone clears DLNA testing
Posted by MobiG @ 5:44 pm

The DLNA has prematurely tipped [pdf link] an incoming Samsung Android smartphone, the Samsung Stealth V SCH-i510. Listed as an Android 2.2 Froyo device, the Stealth V has a 4.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display and an 8-megapixel camera, together with WiFi b/g/n and a microSD card slot.

Unfortunately there are no details beyond that, nor any photos of the handset. Verizon’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Verizon Fascinate, is model SCH-i500, so there’s speculation that this Samsung Stealth V could be a successor to that device or a companion scaled to take on the HTC Desire HD.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 46 2010
Posted by MobiG @ 8:15 pm

Hey gang, welcome to this week’s edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! This is the last edition before Thanksgiving in the US, so if you celebrate the holiday have a great one! We put up our review of the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab this past Sunday. We figure that the Tab has more flexibility in some areas than the iPad but has an overall rougher feel.

A rumor popped up early in the week that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X7 and X7 Mini smartphones would be coming in Q1 2011. The X7 is said to have a 4.3-inch screen and the X7 mini sports a 3.5-inch screen. Intel is getting serious about open-source with the announcement that MeeGo developers will get a free IdeaPad S10-3t. The free tablet for devs will likely spur more to try to work with the OS.

Early in the week the Nokia E7 clears the FCC. The E7 has a QWERTY keyboard, runs Symbian^3 and packs in a 4-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display. We posted up our Holiday Gift Guide Monday and it’s packed with all sorts of cool gear. There should be something for everyone on this list and it’s really packed.

Facebook added a new messaging system on Monday dubbed the Modern Messaging System. The system is interesting, but caused a few issues after its implementation. A really cool remote control for your TV turned up early in the week that is called the Pillow Universal Remote Control. The remote costs about $30 and has the remote built into a throw pillow. The only downside is if you sleep on the thing you may end up with some weird channel on the TV.

EviGroup unveiled the new Paddle Pro tablet computer that runs Windows Home Premium and an Intel Atom N450 CPU. The tablet has strange head tracking tech that lets you control the mouse cursor with your head movement. Proporta unveiled a new case for the iPhone 4 with a battery inside called the TurboCharger Back Pack. The case promises to recharge your iPhone fully one time.

The Dell Inspiron Duo hybrid notebook was rumored to go on sale on the 23 of the month. The cool tablet is convertible with a screen that flips around rather than twisting. The entire Beatles catalog landed on iTunes after years of fans waiting for the tracks to hit. Among the offers is a $149 box set with music, video, and lots more content.

Microsoft has sold a huge amount of Kinect units in the first ten days. According to MS, it moved a million units over a bit more than a week. A crazy expensive new SSD card that fits into the PCIe slot launched this week called the WarpDrive SSD. The thing sells for $11,500 and has up to 1,400MB/s of throughput.

Panasonic unveiled a gigantic 3D Plasma this week that measures 103-inches. The massive TV has a price as large as the screen at $102,000. A teen selling conversion kits to turn the iPhone 4 into the long anticipated and delayed white iPhone 4 has been hit with a legal threat. The teen sold $130,000 worth of conversion gear after coverage and ended up being accused of selling stolen goods.

ThinkGeek landed a really cool alarm clock this week that looks like a Star Wars Lego minifig. The clock can be had in Storm Trooper or Darth Vader guise for about $30 each. A leaked photo surfaced mid-week that claims to be a shot of a white iPhone 4 for Verizon. The device has the Verizon logo in the left corner and has a different antenna design and no SIM card cover.

An interesting concept phone surfaced this week that used both AMOLED and eInk tech inside. That would give the best of both worlds with color LCD for video and the eInk for reading. It seems a story that made the rounds this week was from a paper known for misquoting folks. The original story had Apple’s Woz saying Android would beat the iPhone, Woz quickly clarified that iOS is the best.

The Dell Inspiron Duo was fingered with an official launch date on Thursday. The tablet/netbook will land in early December for $549 and will run Windows 7 and an Atom N550 CPU. An awesome accessory for the iPad surfaced called the Magic Pinball. The accessory turns your iPad into a pinball machine for $79.95.

A really cool stop light concept surfaced late in the week that uses the colors we are used to and an hourglass design to show how long the light has left before it changes. The concept is cool but in the real world, the lack of other lights would cause some issues for the colorblind. Call of Duty: Black Ops is selling like crazy. The game made $650 million in 5 days. That is a crazy amount of money had better than most of the big Hollywood films.

Apparently Google tried to buy Twitter at one point for the tidy sum of $4 billion. That offer was turned down, as was the first offer of $2.5 billion. Sony Ericsson’s CEO has admitted that the company is in talks with Microsoft on using Windows Phone 7 in its line. However, the strict spec and software limitations mean adoption is an off chance according to the CEO.

A new iPad rumor has surfaced that has a world version of the iPad with a multi-mode GSM/CDMA modem hitting in 2011. I wonder if this would be the version that gets that carbon fiber case that surfaced in a patent app from Apple. If you are a photography geek that want’s to show just how geeky you are we found the perfect bracelets for you. The Lens Bracelets look like the focus ring around a camera lens.

I’m not a fan of video game soundtracks, but there are many hard-core game geeks out there that are. If you really like the Red Dead Redemption sound track and have a record player you can get the games soundtrack. You need that record player because the soundtrack is only on red vinyl. Thanks for reading this week’s edition!

The Daily Slash: November 17 2010
Posted by MobiG @ 6:43 am

It’s a day full of fun, in the USA at least, so much of it I can barely contain my joy for it all! Two more Samsung Galaxy Tabs available, one from Costco, the other from Bell. LG announces a new phone by the name of APEX, and Giorgio Armani releases their very own Samsung Galaxy S. Then some sweet concepts: a Porsche phone, a hybrid AMOLED/E-Ink phone, a Mercedes-Benz Biome concept car grown in a nursery, and a solar powered umbrella. Evan’s “Week with the HTC HD7″ continues with “the Apps,” Don decides on Vizio, and Phillip marks the recession of the Social Tide with one big delete button. All this and MORE on The Daily Slash!

SlashNEUTRALITY
You know that pesky little thing called Net Neutrality – aka the principal that service providers and governments should not be allowed to restrict content, sites, platforms, equipment and modes of communication through the internet? Well the UK Communications Minister Ed Vaizey is against that, saying today at a London telecommunications conference organized by the Financial Times: “the market should decide the extent to which service providers can charge for preferential content delivery and slow down other traffic.”

Enough said?

Conceptual Hybrid Display Phone Works with Both AMOLED and EInk
Posted by MobiG @ 1:58 am

Oh conceptual design, how awesome thou art. This is the “Second Life Mobile Phone Concept” by Cho Sinhyung & Jeon Jungjae, a phone that employs both a lovely AMOLED screen in glorious full color when it’s active, and an E-Ink display when it sits in standby mode. Juice saver deluxe! Furthermore, the degree of transparency in the screen shows the percentage of battery remaining. Fade away like you’re Marty McFly. Futuristic.

Forever running out of power? Everyone is, even if you plug your phone in every chance you get. While this concept is based around the life of the battery, take a peek at the excellence in the aesthetics as well. Seems like it’d have more than a couple fingerprints on it on the daily, and maybe it’s breakable, but heck if it doesn’t look spectacular.
