We’re big fans of Synology’s DiskStation NAS drives and the flexible DSM software they run, so we’ve high hopes for the company’s newest small form-factor model. The Synology DiskStation DS411slim hides up to four 2.5-inch drives in a 120 x 105 x 142 mm chassis for up to 3TB of redundant storage; it’s also got a small power footprint, sucking down under 17W under load or 9.6W in hibernation mode.
Up to four 1TB drives can be installed, and thanks to Synology’s own Hybrid RAID (SHR) system you can have redundant storage without all of the HDDs being the same capacity. Alternatively there’s manual control over Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 6 or RAID 10 arrays. External USB or eSATA drives can be added, and there’s Amazon S3 support for cloud backup; network connectivity is via a single gigabit ethernet port.
Time Machine integration, bundled PC backup software and DLNA/UPnP streaming wrap up the main functionality, but Synology’s management app also means you can turn the DS411slim into an iTunes server, FTP or BitTorrent box, IP camera recorder, printer server (for one or two printers), Squeezebox server, or more. It’s also compatible with Synology’s iOS and Android remote apps, and the new DSM beta adds Apple AirPrint support.
The Synology DiskStation DS411slim will go on sale in mid-February; pricing will be announced closer to release.

“With over 10 billion songs downloaded from the iTunes(r) store and
Apple’s market share continuing to grow year-over-year, the growing
audience for Mac OS X will need external storage to backup all their
digital content,” said Darcy Clarkson, vice president of Global Retail
Sales and Marketing for Seagate. “Today’s product introduction addresses
these current market trends and underscores Seagate’s commitment to
delivering flexible, easy-to-use solutions that meet varying customer
needs.”
Seagate has announced the Certified GoFlex Storage System for third-party manufacturers, that the hard-drive company hopes will see more GoFlex-compatible HDD docking bays fitted to third-party devices like media players. Until now, only Seagate has released such devices – like the FreeAgent Theater+ – but with the new certification program other companies will be able to dock directly with the 2.5-inch portable drives.
So far, Seagate has signed Antec, GIEC, Hi-Sense, Ionics and Thermaltake up to the Certified GoFlex Storage System, and the company will be showing off GoFlex docks in TVs, notebook and desktop PCs, a plug computer, DVD and a docking station. No word on when we could expect to see the first of these reach the market, however.
Press Release:
SEAGATE UNVEILS CERTIFIED GOFLEX STORAGE SYSTEM FOR THIRD-PARTY MANUFACTURERS DRAFT
Continuing the Vision of Interoperability and Removable Cartridge
Storage, Seagate and Partners
Showcase Concept Products at CES
LAS VEGAS, NV – January 4, 2011 – Driving a new era of how people
consume their digital content, Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) today announced, at
the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a new program to allow
third-party companies to incorporate slots on their products to support
removable GoFlex(tm) external hard drives. First introduced in May of
2010
, the GoFlex(tm) family is the
next evolution of consumer external hard drives providing the ability to
use an assortment of storage products and interfaces to correspond with
consumer’s needs. The Certified GoFlex(tm) Storage System concept
products on display range from media players and set-top boxes to
computers and televisions, and each will incorporate a slot to accept an
ultra-portable drive compatible with the Certified GoFlex Storage
System. This group of third-party prototype products underscores the
growth of digital media consumption on an increasing number of consumer
electronic products. The Certified GoFlex Storage System will provide a
seamless method by which people can copy, record, access, share and
enjoy more of the music, photos and videos they crave on a wider range
of devices.
The Certified GoFlex Storage System initiative is a certification
process whereby Seagate will qualify products from participating
companies to incorporate slots that meet the specifications of accepting
ultra-portable drives that meet the Certified GoFlex Storage System
standard. The Certified GoFlex Storage System will establish placement
of both slot-based consumer electronics devices as well as certification
of third-party external storage modules. Seagate’s certification also
endorses the soon to be established SATA – IO Universal Storage Module
(USM) specification.
“When Seagate first introduced the GoFlex(tm) storage family last year,
our objective was two pronged: first, address the three major hurdles of
storage adoption — interface flexibility, operating system freedom and
enjoyment of content beyond the compute environment. Secondly, Seagate
wishes to expand the use of storage beyond the typical use-case scenario
of back up and migration of files for the computer,” said Patrick
Connolly, vice president and general manager for Seagate Retail. “The
Certified GoFlex(tm) Storage System is the next step in realizing this
vision and establishing hard drives as the next generation of recordable
media.”
Since the GoFlex ultra-portable drives are also standardized on the new
SATA USM specification
, third-party manufacturers can build GoFlex certified products to
accept a 2.5-inch ultra-portable external hard drive. These third-party
products will help transform the GoFlex ultra-portable drives from an
external storage device to an easy-to-use, detachable storage module
that will enable consumers to access digital content from a variety of
consumer electronic devices. With this initiative, Seagate is actively
involved in leading the shift of digital media consumption from mobile
and computing environments to the living room using home entertainment
devices. These Certified for GoFlex Storage System third-party products
will, for the first time, allow consumers to make choices based on their
own storage needs.
The SATA USM specification is a standard specification to accept a
complete, powered external storage device into consumer electronic
devices. Modules designed according to the SATA USM specification will
enable consumers to instantly access their music, movies, photos and
other content from a variety of consumer electronics products, and to
seamlessly transfer content between devices.
“The growing number of consumer electronics product types with embedded
storage is allowing hard disk drive manufacturers to expand into new
markets. As they expand beyond their traditional home computer markets,
drive manufacturers are pursuing embedded storage solutions in products
other than personal computers,” said Kurt Scherf, vice president and
principal analyst with Parks Associates. “Seagate Technology’s emphasis
on targeting consumer electronics such as digital video recorders,
gaming devices, digital music players, and digital cameras has allowed
it to expand sales of hard drives and provide consumers with greater
flexibility when it comes to consuming, sharing, saving and enjoying
their content.”
Seagate will highlight a variety of applications enabled by USM devices
using the Certified GoFlex Storage System. Additionally, several
consumer electronics manufacturers will be showcasing their Certified
GoFlex Storage System concept products at the 2011 Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas. The showcase will include a television, notebook
computer, desktop PC, plug computer, DVR and docking station. The
companies showcasing these new prospective product capabilities include:
Antec , GIEC ,
Hi-Sense , Ionics
and Thermaltake
.
Silicon Power has debuted a new and compact external storage drive called the Stream S10. The new external HDD is small and compact with a 2.5-inch HDD inside that packs in 750GB of storage space. The case for the HDD is compact and swathed in a cool looking metallic green finish.
The HDD is also very fast thanks to the USB 3.0 connectivity used to connect the drive to your PC. The Stream S10 is very portable thanks to the small size of the case measuring in at 134.2 x 78.8 x 17.7mm and it weighs 145g.
It has LED indictors for power and data access and includes a carry bag to keep the drive looking good if you take it with you on the road a lot. Once formatted the HDD has 640GB of storage space available to the user and has read speed of up to 98MB/s. Pricing and availability are unknown.
Typically, external enclosures for your HDD are just aluminum shells with the interface and power tech needed to allow them to operate outside a computer. They are typically passively cooled which means no fans. Thermaltake has unveiled a new external storage enclosure for 3.5″ HDDs that uses active cooling called the Max 5G.
The enclosure has dual 80mm fans that have blue LEDs for added bling. The fans are intended to cool the HDD for better durability and performance. The LEDs can be turned off and the enclosure connects to the PC via USB 3.0 port. The enclosure supports 3.5″ SATA drives up to 2TB and comes with the USB 3.0 cable.
The enclosure is intended to stand on its side with the fans facing forward and has a tilt out brace on the bottom to keep it from tipping over. The enclosure is made from metal mesh and plastic and the fans spin at 800rpm. That low speed should mean that the fans produce very little noise. Pricing and availability are unknown as this time.
Don’t mind a cute little robot sitting on your harddrive? Good. Because right this moment Amazon.com has a Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for sale for $49.99 with free shipping. Heck with Black Friday, this is a great freaking deal! In fact, it’s $10 under what WD had for similar products, and incase you’re one of those folks who enjoy by-the-bit reductions, that’s 10 cents per gigabyte. Imagine that sort of price 10 years ago. Impossible!
Think about all the stuff you could put on there. Every photo you’ve ever taken. At least a small piece of your music collection. Every text file you’ve ever laid digits on! But again, remember there’s a weird DJ robot illustration on it. If that doesn’t bother you, we suggest pulling the trigger.
I have a bunch of old HDDs that are crammed into drawers in my desk because I didn’t want them in my computer and they are packed with data that I don’t want to just throw them away. I could get an external enclosure for them so I can get the data and use the drives, but I don’t want another enclosure on my desk.
NewerTech has a new universal adapter the is perfect for me and anyone else with multiple HDDs or SSDs sitting around that they want to access the data on. The new adapter is called the USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter. It’s a small and easy to use little box that takes any SATA HDD or SSD and turns the thing into an external USB 3.0 storage drive.
The adapter will work with any size HDD with the standards adapter and will even work with SATA optical drives as well. The thing also has ATA/IDE ribbon cable connectors to let you use any of those old optical drives you might have sitting around. The adapter is available right now for $39.99.
Earlier today, Buffalo officially announced the upcoming availability of two brand new storage devices. The DriveStation Axis LED and MiniStation Stealth bring more storage options to the Buffalo-manufactured line-up, offering plenty of space in an affordable package. If you’re looking for a small black box to sit on your desk, then the MiniStation Stealth is probably a safe bet, considering its small profile. But, if you’re looking for some bright lights to blink on and off, making sure you stay awake, then the DriveStation Axis LED may be your next purchase for the holiday season.
The Buffalo DriveStation Axis LED features a small range of LED lights on the front of the storage device. Based on the lights, you’ll be able to tell how well you’re doing on the space front, and find out with just a glance if you’ll be able to download the full Beatles discography. Luckily enough, the DriveStation starts at 1TB of space, for only $99. If you’re looking at 2TB, though, that will cost you $159. The DriveStation is unveiled, but it won’t be made available until January of 2011.
And then there’s the small MiniStation Stealth. A little black box, designed specifically just to sit on your desk and store your digital belongings, without drawing too much attention to itself. You’ll find just a single USB cable that acts as the power cable, as well as for data transfers. Price starts at $74.99 for 320GB, and ratchet up to $104 for 640GB. The MiniStation Stealth should be available any day now. Check out the full press release below for more information.
