Android 3.0 Honeycomb ROM for NOOKcolor released [Update: Video]
Posted by MobiG @ 6:01 pm

Having seen Barnes & Noble’s NOOKcolor gifted with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, it’s now your turn to catch a jump on Google’s official reveal of the tablet-centric OS. The talented guys over at xda-developers have released a NOOKcolor Honeycomb ROM and it’s surprisingly functional: the touchscreen, wireless and graphics acceleration all work.

The hardware buttons are also functional, along with the accelerometer (for automatic screen rotation). Still to come are sound and hardware video decoding, though neither should stop NOOKcolor owners from getting a decent impression of what Honeycomb brings to the tablet table.

If you’ve not got a NOOKcolor of your own, then head over to Android Community for the full Android 3.0 Honeycomb deep dive, and remember to join us tomorrow, Wednesday February 2, for Google’s official launch event. We’re expecting Motorola’s XOOM to get rolled out for some serious playtime, and we’ll have all the photos and video you need.

Sony Move Server project to push PlayStation Move to PCs
Posted by MobiG @ 1:51 pm

Sony’s plans to make the PlayStation Move controller a PC peripheral have been prematurely outed, after references to the “Move Server project” were included in a Game Developers Conference 2011 schedule. According to the description, Game Systems and Developer Support head John McCutchan will be discussing PC software development for Move at a GDC talk later this month.

McCutchan will be revealing the “Move Server project that will make it possible for academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs” as well as looking at how the Move Shooter accessory can be accommodated. The project appears to be Sony’s attempt to kick start sanctioned hacking of the Move, perhaps in similar ways to how we’ve seen Microsoft’s Kinect and, before then, Nintendo’s Wii used in non-standard ways.

Adam gets Android Market as Notion Ink slate rooted
Posted by MobiG @ 1:07 pm

There comes a time in every Android device’s life when it gets rooted and comes of age; it’s now the turn of Notion Ink‘s Adam. Production versions have only been with buyers for a few days, but already the NotionInkHacks team has rooted the Tegra 2 slate, come up with a custom ROM and added in Android Market access, among other things.

There’s also the keyboard from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, along with a tweak to the screen buffer rate which promises to make it smoother. A new home switcher and Live Wallpaper support have been enabled, and the official YouTube app loaded. In return you have to give up support for OTA official updates, but the offline versions should work instead.

PS3 update v3.56 released; blocks unofficial firmware
Posted by MobiG @ 3:03 pm

Sony isn’t all about the NGP this morning; the company has also pushed out a new firmware update for the PS3. Described as a “minor update”, PS3 System Software v3.56 adds a security patch to the console but also reportedly blocks third-party firmware from being used.

Sony’s console has seen an embarrassing jailbreak by hacker Geohot and others, which resulted in a legal case to limit availability of the security-cracking tools. This firmware update appears to be the next stage in Sony’s damage control.

Viewsonic GTablet gets UI overhaul with Notion Ink’s Eden [Video]
Posted by MobiG @ 3:10 pm

Viewsonic’s GTablet didn’t exactly impress early-adopters with its stock interface, but it seems Notion Ink may have inadvertently come to the rescue. xda-developers modder roebeet has taken the Notion Ink ROMs and whipped up a custom Eden build for the GTablet, putting the three-pane UI and slick browser onto the rival slate.

Video demo after the cut

While you might think that Notion Ink would be less than impressed by the port, in actual fact it seems they’re relatively unconcerned. In his latest blog post CEO Rohan Shravan says “XDA community we love you!” seemingly in reference to the speedy hack.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: January 24 2011
Posted by MobiG @ 8:43 pm

Let’s start this fine Monday with a launch straight into space: once with an Android Device, another time with a Samsung balloon full of paper planes. Next lets get back to Earth with the continuation of the 3D wave with some Tegra 2 3D Chips that’ll be popping up this spring. Grab a big fat update to ADW Launcher EX with several new docks and fixes. Next order of business, Florian Mueller’s been found bunked out – who is he? He’s the guy who found a bunch of Oracle codes in Android’s open source code, saying the suit against Android has total footing -doesn’t appear that way any more. Then remember that $10K iTunes gift card prize for the 10 billionth app downloaded? The mother of the girl who won it hung up on the “you won” call. Check out a column by Don Reisinger by the name of Dear Logitech: The Revue Is Overpriced, and another column by Tim Bajarin called Techies can be Foodies Too Finally, make sure you’re not getting had – you probably don’t need AOL anymore. All this and MORE on SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up.

New Windows Phone 7 dev-jailbreak tool incoming
Posted by MobiG @ 6:42 pm

A new jailbreaking system for Windows Phone 7 devices is promised, though the developer is waiting until after the first official update is released so as to avoid Microsoft patching the exploit. According to Windows Phone dev Julien Schapman, his Windows Phone 7 Device Manager app works in a way “similar to that of ChevronWP7 in the way they both use a fake registration server, but my method is different and more reliable” according to WinRumors wrote Schapman in an email to WinRumors.

“For example it automatically detects when a WP7 is plugged in and will check if this is a registered developer phone,” he continues, “if not it will register it once and for all, so the device will never re-lock like with ChevronWP7.” The previous tool was the handiwork of the ChevronWP7 team, who agreed to pull the app at Microsoft’s request and who are now working with the company on ways to engage with the homebrew community.

Apple hacker digs up Qualcomm baseband proof by decompiling iTunes?
Posted by MobiG @ 10:44 pm

We’re a little short-staffed on Qualcomm chipset engineers at the moment, so forgive us if we can’t immediately confirm this tale, but we’re hearing iPhone hacker Zibri has discovered proof of the Apple / Qualcomm collaboration in his very own build of iTunes. Zibri claims that by tearing apart the latest version, he found the chunk of code above, which contains files that are allegedly the exclusive “building blocks” of Qualcomm radio firmware. That doesn’t tell us anything about a supposed iPhone 5 or iPad 2, unfortunately, as it’s probably just referring to that CDMA chipset in the Verizon iPhone 4… but with the right building blocks, one can craft any number of wonders.
