Qualcomm Baseband Evidence for iPhone and iPad Found by Hacker
Posted by MobiG @ 8:36 am

Evidence pointing toward an upcoming Qualcomm cellular baseband inside the code for Apple’s iTunes software has been found by a hacker by the name of Zibri. This evidence, if proven real, could mean incorporation of Qualcomm’s baseband into the next generation of Apple mobile devices such as iPad 2 and iPhone 5. Zibri claims the code he’s presented is a “definitive answer” to rumors that Qualcomm would be the baseband provider for iPhone 5, this also lending water to the idea that the company is already providing radios for the Verizon CDMA iPhone 4.

Specifically, Zibri mentions the files “partition.mbn” and “AMSS.MBN,” both of which he’s located in the hacked iTunes code, both of which he says mean “only one thing: QUALCOMM. Those files are the building blocks of any Qualcomm baseband.” The version Zibri is hunting through is the same version that’s currently in the homes of computer owners the world over, pointing toward the idea that the devices on which this possible baseband is being used are already going through the testing process.

Take a peek back at the post by the title Apple “A8″ processor & Qualcomm baseband for iPhone 5? This post was made on the 14th of this month, and was sourced back to Apple Daily. Once we get several sources from seemingly completely different directions coming together to say the same thing, things start adding up. Perhaps Qualcomm it is?

iPad and iPhone 4 get XBMC media center hack too [Video]
Posted by MobiG @ 4:54 pm

It’s not just the second-gen Apple TV getting a shot of XBMC today; as long as your iPad is jailbroken you can now load the media center on the iOS slate, too. As with the Apple TV install, this is the full version of XBMC rather than just a remote app, supports hardware video acceleration, and the same software will even work on the iPhone 4.

Video demo after the cut

The experience on the iOS smartphone is, XBMC admits, “currently frustrating” which seems to imply they’re working on a better version. Still, it’s an example of how capable the Apple A4 processor – found in the Apple TV, iPad and iPhone 4 – is.

Full instructions here.

Apple TV XBMC hack makes $99 STB a 1080p HD media center
Posted by MobiG @ 1:34 pm

The media center marvels over at XBMC have managed to get a full install up and running on a jailbroken second-gen Apple TV, turning the $99 set-top box into a full media player capable of Full HD 1080p decoding. No mere thin-client or remote install, this is the full XBMC experience.

Video demo after the cut

The magic comes from XBMC’s use of the official Apple VideoToolBox API, which offers direct video acceleration from the 1GHz Apple A4 chip lurking inside the Apple TV. Normally that tops out at 720p HD with iTunes HD video streams, but it’s capable of 1080p for non-Apple content.

You can download XBMC here, though you’ll need to jailbreak your Apple TV first since this doesn’t exactly sit well with how Apple would like you to use the STB. PwnageTool will do that for you, however; instructions here.

Microsoft offers free Windows Phone 7 to Geohot
Posted by MobiG @ 8:30 pm

Microsoft continues its surprisingly sensible approach to Windows Phone 7 hacking, offering notorious Sony and Apple hacker George “Geohot” Hotz a free WP7 handset. Hotz had expressed his disillusion with Sony after the company sued him for his work hacking the PS3′s copy protection, and suggested that he might look instead to Windows Phone 7; Microsoft “entrepreneur on loan” Brandon Watson promptly tweeted him with the offer of a free phone to “let dev creativity flourish.”

“#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on #wp7, send me email and the team will give you a phone – let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev” Brandon Watson

According to Watson’s Twitter profile, he is working with Microsoft to help the company restore its “developer mojo”; it’s not clear whether Hotz took the exec up on his offer. Microsoft recently met with the ChevronWP7 team responsible for the Windows Phone 7 unlocking tool which turned regular handsets into developer-friendly models, in an attempt to embrace the homebrew community rather than fight against it.

iPhone iOS 4.3 multitouch gestures get video demo
Posted by MobiG @ 7:50 pm

Multitouch gestures have been spotted in the iOS 4.3 Beta 1 release, with BGR‘s sources sending in evidence of internal settings pages that suggest the iPhone will also get the gesture support, not just the iPad. Meanwhile Antoni Nygaard has managed to get the functionality working on his iPhone 3GS, and caught the whole thing on video.

Video demo after the cut

As you might expect, the same gestures that would work well on the 9.7-inch display of an iPad are a little more cumbersome on a 3.5-inch smartphone. Count on completely covering the display while you swipe with four fingers, for instance.

Nygaard also demonstrates the changeable rotation lock/mute switch setting, which upset iPad owners when it was removed in iOS 4.2. Previous rumors suggested that Apple would ditch the physical home button on the iPad and iPhone and instead use gestures for controlling home and app switcher functionality; it certainly seems that’s possible, though whether it’s especially elegant on the iPhone is a matter of opinion.

BMW 1-Series gets Nokia C7 remote-control [Video]
Posted by MobiG @ 5:41 pm

Nokia’s C7 proved a respectable business handset when we reviewed it, but then we didn’t try remotely-controlling a BMW with the Symbian smartphone. That’s just what two engineers from Nokia Asia have apparently managed, taking just twenty days to create the necessary software and remote control hardware to operate a 1-Series’ steering, brakes and accelerator, as well as all the regular gadgets inside.

Video demo after the cut

We’re not quite sure why the duo did it, beyond them apparently wanting to prank a poor parking attendent by driving off the car he’s just about to get in and park, but we won’t argue that it’s a cool hack. Not something we expect to see in the Ovi Store any time soon, however.

USB smartphone exploit turns Android into an invader
Posted by MobiG @ 3:32 pm

Next time somebody asks you if they can recharge their smartphone from your laptop’s USB port, you might be opening yourself up to a potential malware attack. Professor and student team Angelos Stavrou and Zhaohui Wang from George Mason University have figured out a system whereby a compromised Android smartphone mounts as a standard HID (human input device) when plugged into a Windows, OS X or Linux computer, potentially giving keyboard and mouse access to malware or even a remote hacker.

Because the new device installation happens automatically – and with little in the way of notifications or ways to prevent it from taking place – users might not spot that the phone is loading as more than just a mass-storage device. Although the proof of concept was done with a modified Android kernel, it could just as easily be modified to run on iOS devices like the iPhone 4.

“Say your computer at home is compromised and you compromise your Android phone by connecting them. Then, whenever you connect the smartphone to another laptop or computing device I can take over that computer also, and then compromise other computers off that Android. It’s a viral type of compromise using the USB cable” Angelos Stavrou

Device contamination could come from a downloaded app or browser exploit, or it could be spread by plugging a clean device into an infected computer; Stavrou says it will also work with direct USB connections between smartphones. Meanwhile antivirus software wouldn’t necessarily spot the malware in action, because it would appear to be normal keyboard/mouse activity. The duo presented their research this week at the Black Hat DC conference.

Microsoft talks Windows Phone 7 homebrew with ChevronWP7 team
Posted by MobiG @ 2:37 pm

When hackers are playing with your platform, you can either try to thwart them – leading to a cat & mouse situation as with Apple and the iOS jailbreakers – or you can work with them; sensibly, Microsoft is apparently doing the latter when it comes to Windows Phone 7. According to WinRumors, the company recently met with part of the ChevronWP7 team, responsible for the Windows Phone 7 Unlocker tool, to discuss how homebrew application developers can co-exist with Microsoft’s existing official developers.

The Windows Phone 7 Unlocker made it possible for unofficial apps to be sideloaded to a regular WP7 handset, rather than demanding that developers pay Microsoft’s $99 annual developer registration fee. At the time it was heralded as the first step toward an unofficial Windows Phone Marketplace, similar to the iOS Cydia app store; however, ChevronWP7 later pulled the tool at Microsoft’s request, and the company plans to close the loophole that facilitated it in the upcoming WP7 software update.

Instead, it seems Microsoft wants to look at more legitimate ways to enable the homebrew community, and given the amount of catch-up it has to do to compete with Android and iPhone that seems the sensible route. According to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 group product manager Greg Sullivan, the company will have more to announce about homebrew on the platform “in the coming months.”
