Watch out for the law, it’s gonna git ya! On a different side of the world, the Android community is getting along a little better – see Japan build a human-sized android with an Android brain – and light-up eyes! Over on SlashGear we’re popping popcorn with lasers, feelin pretty healthy hosting a game of Call of Duty on a medical server, and rocking relatively hard with the amount of music-related posts we’ve got up – see if you can spot em! All this and MORE on SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up! OH- and Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales says App Stores are the worst!

Promise’s SmartStor Zero NAS streamer dumbs down DLNA for the iPad (hands-on)
Posted by MobiG @ 7:15 pm

CES 2011 might be over but we’ve still got a few gee-bees of data to get through before calling it quits. One nugget of unpublished glory is this SmartStor Zero NAS from Promise Technology. Now hold on… just because it’s a DLNA 1.5 compliant Network Attached Storage device doesn’t mean that it’s complicated to use. Hell, even iOS users can join the DLNA streaming and media transfer party even though Apple is one of only a few major manufacturers missing from the alliance. Promise has purposely dumbed down this particular 1TB or 2TB NAS to make it suitable for use in any home where a “zero configuration” storage and media streamer is the priority. That’s most households, come to think of it. Promise’s Billy Harrison gave us a walkthrough of the highlights including a live demonstration of the free (for a limited time) SmartStor Fusion Stream app running on an iPad (and soon Android and Windows Phone 7 devices). Compared to many DLNA streamers that we’ve seen this one was dead simple to use and even allowed us to upload / download music, video, and photographs to / from the SmartStor Zero. Of course, other devices that support native DLNA upload and DLNA download (like the Droid X) will work right out of the box. Fusion Stream also supports media multitasking right inside the app. But hey, don’t take our word for it, watch Bill lay down the truth after the break.

Apple Patent Application Suggests Hover Sensing
Posted by MobiG @ 7:54 am

Next step, Marty McFly and the Hoverboard! No, not actually, this is a patent application for what appears to be “Touch and hover sensing.” What the what? That sounds pretty fancy. In the app, they speak of a sort of capacitive sensor array that not only responds to signals that are touching the surface, but hovering on either side of it – YES, both above and behind! They mention that the shield that would be behind (aka this would be the non-screen side of the iPad,) could be enhanced by an AC ground shield that would be attached to the back. What would you even do back there? I don’t know, put your hand into a virtual reality screen making it look like a robot hand? Hey! Good idea!

Apple, look at the awesome idea I just had. Ah… probably you have better ideas already. What will they do with technology such as this? What sort of games and helpful apps could be made when you can work with your screen by placing your hand inside an electrical field that extends above the screen? This is just totally wacky, I am telling you. Note the following clip from the application:

A capacitive sensor array can be driven with electrical signals, such as alternating current (AC) signals, to generate electric fields that extend outward from the sensor array through a touch surface to detect a touch on the touch surface or an object hovering over the touch surface of a touch screen device, for example. The electric field can also extend behind the sensor array in the opposite direction from the touch surface, which is typically an internal space of the touch screen device. An AC ground shield may be used to enhance the hover sensing capability of the sensor array. The AC ground shield can be positioned behind the sensor array and can be stimulated with signals having the same waveform as the signals driving the sensor array. As a result, the electric field extending outward from the sensor array can be concentrated. In this way, for example, the hover sensing capability of the sensor array may be improved.

Then take a peek at the full PDF here: Apple-hover-touch-ed.pdf

ALSO NOTE: Remember when they filed a similar patent application way back in 2008? Take a peek at that right over here: Apple Hover Patent Tracks Non-Touch Gestures

Analysts Report Apple May Have Sold Nearly 90 Million iPhones Since Launch
Posted by MobiG @ 8:49 pm

Apple will be revealing their earnings during their last quarter, which ended on Christmas Day, next week, and it’s suggested that the company will announce that they’ve sold somewhere in the ballpark of 90 million iPhones throughout the world since its launch in 2007. These estimates were polled by Fortune from 33 different analysts, all of which had a different number to chime in as to how many iPhones Apple sold in their last quarter.

The high number comes from the already high 73.7 million iPhones Apple has sold throughout the world since September, when the company last revealed global numbers. That brought the Cupertino-based company $45.6 billion in additional revenue. Estimates for this quarter range from 14 million, all the way up to 18.35 million. The average seems to be at 15.78 million. And if that is the case, then the iPhone would have sold 89.6 million in worldwide sales, even before it launches on Verizon.

There’s no doubt that when the iPhone 4 launches on Verizon next month, that the sales of the device will sky rocket once again. But, with Apple’s earning call right around the corner, it will certainly be interesting to see how many iPhones the company has managed to move since their last earnings call. Will the company surprise the world again?

GSLO to sell Volt Solar Charger for iPhone in US
Posted by MobiG @ 4:21 pm

GSLO has been buying up the rights to sell some interesting gear in the US. This is the company that is bringing the Peel 520 to the states among other things. GSLO has announced that it has landed the North American distribution rights to the Volt Solar Charger for the iPhone.

GSLO is getting the exclusive rights to the solar charger for all of North America. The Volt is made by a company called XSE. The Volt Solar Charger is an external battery pack that fits onto the iPhone and extends the battery life by using a solar charger on the outside of the case to trickle charge the battery.

The battery inside can also be charged by using a USB cable for longer runtime with the solar panel helping to keep the battery topped off. GSLO is mum on when the Volt will come to the US and how much the device will cost.

Millennial Media December 2010 mobile market stats unveiled
Posted by MobiG @ 3:36 pm

Millennial Media tracks the mobile market to offer us all sorts of little details on the most popular devices, makers, and operating systems and the details are based on impressions for mobile ads generated online. The latest details offered from the metrics firm are for December 2010.

Apple continued to be the most popular device maker with 21% of the impressions on its devices for the month. Samsung was in the second spot, and HTC was in third place. One interesting fact was that on an individual device basis, Android devices held 16 of the top mobile device spots. The iPhone was number one, the Blackberry Curve was in the second spot, the iPod touch was third, HTC Nexus One was fourth and the Motorola Droid took fifth.

The OS mix showed that Android was tops with 46% of the impressions, iOS was second with 32% of all impressions, and RIM had third with 16% of all impressions. The Windows OS share of all impression was only 1%. Android surpassed iOS as the largest smartphone OS on the network for the first time in December with its 46%.

Case-mate announces Verizon iPhone 4 accessories
Posted by MobiG @ 3:11 pm

Case-mate has been offering cases for the iPhone 4 on AT&T since the smartphone launched. That doesn’t mean that the company isn’t taking advantage of the newly announced Verizon iPhone 4 though with a grab specifically for those looking to get the Apple smartphone on the Verizon network.

Case-mate is reaching out with cases for the Verizon iPhone 4 and some of them are strange. Take the Monsta case for instance; it reminds me a bit of The Walking Dead. It has a white base with a blood spatter looking top with a mouth and uses the lens and flash area for an eye.

You can also get the Waddler, which looks like a penguin. If you want something a bit more mundane the Egg is well cushioned, the Gelli looks cool, and the Vroom with a tire tread pattern is perfect for auto fans. Any of the cases for the iPhone 4 will fit the Verizon offering since it and the AT&T iPhone have the same design and shape.
