Apple AirPlay devices set to explode in 2011
Posted by MobiG @ 3:19 am

Although DLNA may have had a significant head start, the streaming media standard available on more than 9,000 devices is about to be challenged in a very big way by Apple’s upstart AirPlay technology. At least it will be if Jordan Watters, BridgeCo‘s VP of Sales and Marketing, is to be believed. BridgeCo as you’ll recall, is the company that makes the silicon for AirPlay devices — currently an exclusive arrangement we’re told. While Apple may have thrust BridgeCo into the consumer spotlight, this ten year old company has a long history of quietly providing networked media processors and connectivity software to a who’s who of audio companies. Here at CES we’ve already seen two speakers from iHome, the Zeppelin Air from B&W, and a trio of speakers from the previously unannounced AirPlay partner Klipsch rolled out. And this is just the beginning.

According to Jordan Watters, AirPlay devices could ultimately dwarf “made for iPod” audio docks by 2x to 4x. Part of the reason for Jordan’s optimism is the fact that so many iOS devices have already been sold and that many audio devices already on the market using BridgeCo chips can add AirPlay functionality via a software update, including the nine receivers just announced from Denon and Marantz. “The ecosystem is already there,” he said smiling. And unlike iPod docks which are usually sold at a rate of one per iOS device, Watters sees consumers purchasing multiple AirPlay devices for every iOS device sold in order to enable whole-home distributed audio. In fact, growth could come as a “step function ramp sucking into the market,” Jordan enthused. In other words, he expects AirPlay growth to be explosive. We’d chalk up the hyperbolic talk to Jordan’s marketing role if it weren’t for the abundance of anecdotal evidence supporting his claims here at CES. To start with, the company’s modest meeting room was packed with interested manufacturers poking around BridgeCo’s AirPlay offering. Jordan’s also booked back-to-back-to-back with meetings until the show ends (and into the coming weeks we suspect). But what really convinced us was an all-in-one speaker prototype from a major consumer electronics company that was quickly whisked away before meeting the sensor beneath our D300′s lens. If they’re involved, well, we expect the rest will follow.

iHome drops new iP3BZC iPod/iPhone dock with 50W of power
Posted by MobiG @ 2:19 pm

I have played with lots of iPhone and iPod docks over the years and many of them sound pretty good but the thing they almost all lack is power. If you are a fan of deep bass in your music, you don’t often find that in a docking station and the reason is that the things often just don’t have the power to give that deep bass.

ihomeip3 sg

iHome has a new docking station that will work with any dockable iPod and the iPhone called the iP3BZC. The dock has Bongiovi Digital Power Station technology, which is a real time DSP constantly scanning audio and restoring the detail lost in compressed audio formats. The 50W of power the dock has drives a pair of 3.5″ coaxial neodymium speakers to deliver improved sound quality.

The dock also has a built-in EQ, AV output for sending video to another screen, and a line-in jack. That line-in jack allows the dock to work with any music player. The design of the dock is adjustable so inserts aren’t needed. The iP3 is available right now for $199.99.

iHome Shows Off Portable Speaker with Apple’s AirPlay Built-In
Posted by MobiG @ 9:15 pm

A company like iHome is probably supposed to showcase something that Apple shows off only days before. The company makes a killing off creating some of the best accessories for Apple’s line-up of mobile media devices, so why shouldn’t they showcase a brand new portable speaker, featuring Apple’s just-announced AirPlay feature?

iHome AirPlay Speaker

This is the first speaker to feature the wireless media feature. The new feature will be made ready by the release of iOS 4.2, which is set to hit the iPad, and other iDevices, in November this year. As you can tell from the picture, it’s not a complicated piece of equipment. A single-piece design, the speaker is specifically manufactured to accept audio input over a WiFi connection. What you’ll also notice is that the iHome speaker doesn’t have a dock of any kind. It’s meant to proactively promote the WiFi streaming, from your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone.

It also has a built-in battery, so that means that at particular points in the day, like when you’re not charging it some how, it will be completely wireless. That’s probably where that “portable” aspect comes from. Unfortunately, iHome isn’t saying when the speaker will be released, or how much it will cost. They do say that it will be ready to buy by the holidays, though, so that’s good. It probably won’t be the cheapest speaker out there, but if you’re looking for that wireless home, this is one step towards that goal.

Posted by MobiG @ 4:14 pm

iHome has gobs of docks, clocks and other gear for the iPhone and iPod. The company has announced that it is updating its flagship iP90 alarm clock docking station for Apple devices for 2010. The dock gets some new features that will make it better.

A Time Sync feature sets the time on the clock to the time on your iPhone or iPod. The improved sound comes from Reson8 stereo speaker chambers and the bass and treble is adjustable. iHome iP39SZC iPhone speaker dock and kitchen timer drops
Posted by MobiG @ 2:04 pm

On more than one occasion I have found myself in the kitchen needing to cook more than one thing and having only one timer. I typically do what any average geek with an iPhone in their pocket would do and set up a timer there. If you often have a similar issue iHome has a cool new iPhone/iPod dock with a kitchen timer built-in.

ihomekitchentimer sg

The thing is called the iP39SZC Kitchen Timer and FM Alarm Clock Radio Speaker System for iPhone/iPod. I hope the thing has a really big box to fit that entire product name. The dock has an integrated alarm clock that can wake you to your iPod or FM radio. It charges and plays music from the device at the same time as well.

You can set dual alarms that allow you to set exactly when they go off by the day of the week. A USB charge port is integrated to allow you to charge an additional USB device at the same time. Two kitchen timers are integrated letting you cook your pizza and chill that beer in the freezer perfectly. The device isn’t available to purchase just yet, but it will sell for $99.99.

iHome’s iHome+Sleep app ready to lull you into (and out of) a slumber
Posted by MobiG @ 3:52 am

iHome has taken a momentary break from its endless onslaught of iPod dock-equipped alarm clocks to whip up a little app that plays nice with said clocks. Of course, alarm clocks and sleep go hand-in-hand, so it makes sense that the so-called iHome+Sleep app for iPhone and iPod touch would basically amount to a fancy alarm management system when paired with any of the company’s “app-enhanced” models, complete with social network integration for letting all your friends and enemies what kind of tunes you’re waking and falling asleep to. You can set multiple recurring alarms with different playlists, get a variety of vital stats on your slumber, keep tabs on the weather situation, and generally keep your nightstand looking cooler than average. Best part is, it’s free and available now.
