TomTom’s Map Share update brings crowdsourced navigation to iPhone GPS app
Posted by MobiG @ 11:12 am

Buckled early and sprung for TomTom’s iPhone GPS app, did you? If so, that very app just got a lot better today, as version 1.6 has brought TomTom’s Map Share — a crowdsourcing aspect that’ll keep your maps more up-to-date than you ever thought possible. Map Share enables iPhone users to make changes instantly to their own maps and to benefit from free map updates made by the TomTom community and verified by the company itself. That means that users will now be able to edit street names, set driving directions and block / unblock streets directly on their maps, and if you’re kind enough, you can share those updates with the rest of the TomTom community. Furthermore, the app will automatically check for new verified updates (including turn restrictions, speed limit changes and crossing changes), so the previously tried-and-true “my maps were old!” excuse will sadly no longer work. Give and take, as they say.

TomTom offers free iPhone 4 adapter for Car Kit
Posted by MobiG @ 3:06 am

We still maintain that you’ve got better options than TomTom when it comes to iPhone GPS software, but if you pulled the trigger before giving yourself a moment to consider what you were actually doing, this here news may just interest you. In an effort to maintain compatibility with Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone, TomTom is now including a simple adapter for all Car Kit orders going out on September 1st or later. If you ordered one prior to that, you can apply down in the source link for a freebie to be sent your way. Or just hack something up in the garage that looks like the insert above. Your call, vaquero.

Update: Full press release after the break.

[Thanks, Dan]

Select LA-area iPhones insist they’re in Boulder, Colorado
Posted by MobiG @ 12:46 am

The iPhone’s iteration of Google Maps has been shown up time and time again by Google Maps Navigation on Android, but a quirk this big just has to be linked to some Skyhook database issue. According to a new report coming from the LA area, select iPhone users in Southbay cities near Los Angeles are seeing their GPS software linked to Boulder, Colorado, and the issue has been going on for around a week now. What’s curious is that the erroneous positioning affects other third-party iPhone GPS apps as well, and an ABC report notes that a “spokesperson at AT&T said the problem is with Apple.” Pass the blame much, AT&T? So, have any of you LA-based iPhoners found yourself navigating to Folsom Field when trying to find your way to Rodeo Drive?

[Thanks, Charles]

Dual Electronics iPod touch GPS dock ships at long last
Posted by MobiG @ 3:13 pm

It took a little longer than expected, but the first major docking solution to transform ones iPod touch into a full fledged navigating machine is now shipping directly from Apple. Dual Electronics’ XGPS300 was originally announced way back in November of last year, and after a minor hiccup in January, we’re finally able to plop down $199.95 to snag a window-sucking cradle with an inbuilt GPS receiver, rechargeable battery, amplified speaker and NavAtlas US / Canada map app. So, what’ll it be? This, or one of those perfectly acceptable $99 PNDs? If you’re smart, you’ll tune in next week for our review before making any rash decisions.

[Thanks, Bridget]
