Glu Mobile will offer games on Windows Phone 7 devices at launch
Posted by MobiG @ 3:20 pm

I like to download lots of games for my iPhone and iPad to help pass the time when I am sitting around bored waiting for the kids to get out of school. When it comes time to download games I often look for names of developers that I know make quality games rather than risking buying a crap game. One of my favorite mobile game firms is Glu Mobile.

gluwinpo7 sg

If you are planning to give Windows Phone 7 a try when the devices hit the market soon you will be glad to hear that Glu has announced it will be developing games for the new Windows platform. Glu was chosen by Microsoft to be one of the partners to offer games in the launch window for the new OS.

Launch titles from Glu for the phone will include the music game favorite Guitar Hero 5 that lets players play guitar, drums, or bass on the go with 20 different popular rock songs. The company will also offer a game called Glyder: Adventure Worlds that has players playing as Eryn as she glides around on a handmade glider. Both of the games should be cool and show off the gaming capability of WinPo 7.

Sony Seeking Out Android Developers for Mobile Gaming
Posted by MobiG @ 1:35 am

It’s been just over a month since we heard anything about Sony and Android. Not since that big story about Sony Ericsson building some kind of monstrous PSP Go! like phone, featuring Android 3.0 and with a main focus on mobile gaming. And more than likely, this has everything to do with that. According to a new job posting for Sony, the company is currently looking for someone with past experience in mobile gaming, as well as mobile developing as it specifically deals with Android.

Android Sony Developer 540x226

That previous story, about Sony Ericsson and Google working together to create something that most everyone would want, especially those saddened by the current state of Android-based gaming (even if it is getting better), made us immediately start looking forward to the future. And with Sony currently trying to improve and grow their internal mobile gaming development teams, it looks like this is a good time to start looking forward to whatever device they may be working on.

Or, this could mean that Sony’s just planning on focusing on the Android platform, entirely on its own, with no plans to create any kind of hardware. If that’s the case, then it could certainly be like other video game publishers, like EA, who have made a commitment to the Google created mobile Operating System. Either way, gaming on the Android platform looks like it’s going to get a shot of adrenaline some time in the future, and that’s only going to lead to good things.

Xbox Live launch titles for Windows Phone 7 finally revealed, we’ve got the full preview
Posted by MobiG @ 8:12 am

We’ve known that proper Xbox Live gaming (powered by XNA) was coming to Windows Phone 7 devices, but we’d yet to see any of that thumb-spraining goodness in action besides a brief demo and a few developer videos. Well, Microsoft has finally come clean with details about its launch strategy for the platform, and from where we sit, it’s definitely looking pretty promising. First off, the company has announced a full list of launch titles for WP7 handsets, including some familiar names and franchises like Castlevania, Halo: Waypoint, Star Wars, Crackdown, and Guitar Hero, alongside a handful of newer properties like the ultra-cute ilomilo, produced in-house by Microsoft Game Studios. In total, the company will launch with over 60 game titles, with new offerings appearing every week in the Xbox Live Marketplace, just like its big brother console version. We’ve got all the details, a full list of the launch titles, and our hands-on preview after the break — so read on to get the scoop!

id Shows Off Rage on an iPhone 4, Running Strong at 60fps
Posted by MobiG @ 1:57 am

Despite Sony and Nintendo still claiming plenty of space in the mobile gaming market, there’s a real threat from Apple. No, not by the Cupertino-based company directly (outside of manufacturing the device, of course), but from the video game developers out there who are mad geniuses enough to do things like id Software’s John Carmack has done. Through some kind of incantation of Black Magick, he has squeeezed id’s Rage title onto the iPhone 4, and it’s running at 60fps.

iPhone 4 Rage

A small part of us, perhaps the part that wants to hold on to some kind of rationale for the real world, wants to think that this is some kind of cruel joke, but it isn’t. In fact, Carmack believes that with this showcase, he’s actually shown that original Xbox titles, and PS2 titles for that matter, have been blown out of the water. And he could very well be right. Because not only is the title running at a ridiculous amount of frames per second, but it’s also featuring MegaTextures, which just goes out of its way to make the game look amazing.

According to Carmack, while they were doing some test runs for some kind of variation for the Wii, someone had the mad idea to make Rage work on the iPhone. And, sure enough, they got it to work flawlessly — and due to the fact that they’re starting ahead in the development cycle, thanks to that whole “mad idea,” it won’t take the id team four years to make Rage for the iPhone. In fact, the first title is actually going to come out before the PC/console version — with a second title set to launch during that time.

And while the showcased the game on an iPhone 4, Carmack noted that the game will run on an iPhone 3GS, but it looks the best showing off on the iPad. What’s probably best of all, though, is the fact that the developers have no intention of hiking up the price for Rage, and intend to have it be competitively priced within the App Store, when it does launch. And, if you’re an Android fan, Carmack is looking at the platform, but he won’t think about making a game for it for at least another six months. Better late than never, right?

Microsoft to open mobile games studio, develop and incubate Windows Phone 7 titles
Posted by MobiG @ 5:22 am

Microsoft employees may eat their own dog food, but they won’t have to code cross-platform Windows Phone 7 games in their spare time — Redmond job postings recently revealed that there’s a studio for that, which will develop and publish first- and second-party titles on the company’s dime. According to job descriptions, the newly-christened “MGS Mobile” will develop “showcase” Windows Phone 7 titles with an emphasis on connected play, and also incubate titles from indie devs and partners like the original Microsoft Game Studios, its older Xbox-based sibling. Interestingly enough, games won’t necessarily be limited to Windows Phone 7 devices, but may appear on “emerging mobile platforms” as well — the idea being to advance Microsoft’s position in the mobile gaming space rather than just pimp the WP7 platform. Is the world ready for Halo on MeeGo? Oh, you bet your britches it is. Just don’t expect to see Xbox games on Android, yo.

Update: Looks like Microsoft’s actually been on the job hunt since June. It’s just so hard to find good employees these days.

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Will Play Xbox LIVE Arcade Games
Posted by MobiG @ 10:57 pm

It feels like it’s been forever since Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7. And, despite the fact the details came afterward, it almost feels longer since we actually heard any details about one of the future mobile Operating System’s coolest features: Xbox LIVE support. We know it goes beyond just having your Xbox LIVE profile/avatar, and we know the XNA framework will make it easy for developers to integrate features from the console to the handset, but apparently Microsoft is going for the throat on this one.

7 Series LIVE 540x251

According to Oded Ran, who is the Head of Consumer Marketing for Windows Phone, “There are four million Xboxes in the UK compared to 2.5 million iPhones; we’re now working with developers who know how to make games, and they’re able to port Xbox Arcade games to mobile phones easily.” Obviously, the defining line has been drawn in the proverbial sand, and Microsoft wants to leverage the strength of their Xbox 360/LIVE/Arcade platforms, and make them a paramount feature on their upcoming handsets.

3D Game WP7S 540x304

With the XNA framework, it’s also possible for developers and game publishers to create LIVE Arcade games for the PC, the console, and the mobile phone — meaning the level of playability, integration, and overall fun could go through the roof if the Redmond-based company actually implements it well enough to be interesting.

Nintendo 3DS Official: Touch Panel, 3D Without Glasses [Update]
Posted by MobiG @ 9:10 pm

It’s been a rumor for a little while now, but Nintendo, at their press conference at E3 on Tuesday officially announced the Nintendo 3DS. Basically, it’s 3D in your pocket. Nintendo spent the majority of their time on the 3DS, at least in the beginning, talking about how well their 3D works compared to the competition, especially considering there’s no glasses needed. We’re fans of that plan, for sure. And, just as we had heard rumored before, there’s an option to turn the 3D on or off.

Nintendo 3DS Official2 540x297

Reggie Fils-Aime believes that the 3DS is the best way to play 3D games. After all, it’s the solution for your desires to bring 3D gaming with you wherever you go. And, that’s pretty neat. As for specs, you’re getting an upper-screen that’s 3.5-inches. Along the side, you’ll find a slider that will let you adjust the 3D for how far you’re holding the device away from your face, making the graphics all that much better. You can also choose to turn off the 3D effect entirely, if you wish.

nintendo 3ds official 3

The bottom screen is not 3D compatible, and it’s a touch panel. The 3DS is also going to be compatible with Nintendo DSi titles, so that’s another bonus. There’s no mention of pricing or availability quite yet, but that’s coming, we’re sure. Nintendo’s still on stage, talking up their mobile device of the future. So, stay tuned.

Press Release:

NINTENDO INTRODUCES GLASSES-FREE 3D GAMING, AND

UNLEASHES THE INDUSTRY’S BEST FRANCHISES IN ENTIRELY NEW WAYS

A Dream Lineup: Nintendo 3DS, Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, Mario, Golden Sun,

GoldenEye, Mickey Mouse, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, PilotWings, Paper Mario …

LOS ANGELES, June 15, 2010 – Nintendo is raising the bar – again.

Nintendo changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming on the Nintendo DS™ in 2004. Nintendo then pioneered the motion-controlled gaming revolution with the Wii™ console and the Wii Remote™ controller back in 2006. Today the company unveils an even more immersive gaming experience: Nintendo 3DS™.

At the E3 Expo today, Nintendo gave the world the first look at a portable system that lets people view games in 3D, without the need for special glasses. Nintendo also announced a substantial list of upcoming games for Nintendo 3DS, the Wii console and the Nintendo DS family of systems – a lineup that reads like a who’s who of some of the greatest franchises in video game history with a completely new look and feel.

“The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth,” said Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who pioneered the fully rendered 3D video game world with Super Mario 64™.

Nintendo 3DS comes with a 3.53-inch top screen and a 3.02-inch bottom touch screen. It has three cameras – one inner and two outer – to deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. It includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor and even a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input. At the E3 Expo, Nintendo showed attendees a range of games and applications for Nintendo 3DS that reinvent some of the industry’s most beloved franchises. These include:

· Kid Icarus™: Uprising, the long-awaited franchise follow-up to the NES™ classic.

· Mario Kart™, which shows off the potential of driving and tossing bananas in 3D.

· nintendogs™ + cats, a new version of the best-selling nintendogs franchise that lets players interact even more with their virtual puppies – and kittens!

· PilotWings Resort™, a flying simulation that lets players soar above Wuhu Island.

· Animal Crossing™, a new installment of the charming community-building franchise.

· StarFox 64™ 3D, a game that demonstrates the true distance and depth of outer space using Nintendo’s well-known franchise.

· Steel Diver™, a new submarine-navigation game from Nintendo.

· Paper Mario™, which brings paper-based 2D environments to life.

Nintendo 3DS also comes to market with the strongest third-party support of any video game system in Nintendo history. Games on display at the Nintendo booth at the E3 Expo include:

Nintendo also announced a substantial slate of games on the way for its Wii console and Nintendo DS family of systems, with a list of characters and franchises that appeal to all types of gamers.

“If the video game industry had an All-Star team, Nintendo’s games would fill the starting lineup,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The combination of advanced interface and engaging game play broadens our appeal to all audiences. This is evidenced perfectly at the E3 Expo this year by the incredible new experience and controls that Wii MotionPlus brings to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.”

Wii:

· The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword: The game marks a turning point for the franchise, as the introduction of full motion controls enabled by the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory synchronizes player movements with Link’s actions while offering the most intuitive play control of any Legend of Zelda game to date. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season.

Each samurai has different skills and weapons, and each one offers a different perspective on the overall story of the unification of Japan. The game is scheduled to launch on Sept. 27.

· GoldenEye 007™ from Activision: The original revolutionized first-person shooters, and this Wii-exclusive sequel features four-player split-screen competition or up to eight players competing online. It’s the signature GoldenEye experience for a new era, and is scheduled to launch this fall.

In Wasteland, an alternate world with lands inspired by Disney’s animated films and theme parks, players use paint and paint thinner to change the world and affect the outcome of the game. Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Xbox Live Integration Part of a Managed Portfolio
Posted by MobiG @ 11:59 pm

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is doing a pretty good job of maintaining itself in the market, even if it is still months away before a launch. But, with videos like the one we saw earlier today, showcasing the Office Hub, how could it not be? This time around we don’t have a video, but we do have some more information pertaining to the Xbox LIVE experience you should expect this holiday season on your handset.

7 Series LIVE 540x251

Andre Vrignaud is Microsoft’s Director of Games Platform Strategy, and he has recently illuminated some details about how the game selection is going to take place in the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. First and foremost, he wants to make sure that people understand that the system is going to work much in the same way that the system works for the Xbox LIVE Arcade titles selection process. The company has a managed portfolio, and they want to make sure that they do not saturate the market, and therefore negatively impact the products therein.

Microsoft sees how the mobile gaming industry is evolving, and they’ve noticed that the one, most obvious problem is the “race to zero.” This means that there are so many mixed-bag experiences in any one particular market, all of them at varying prices, that it becomes hard for any one title, no matter how great it is, to stand out amongst the over-sized crowd. We imagine ranking systems can do some good for sifting out the lower-quality titles, but when ranked titles go head-to-head, we concur that usually the free version will more than likely win out.

3D Game WP7S 540x304

Having too many, mixed quality titles available in any one marketplace just minimizes the overall quality of that marketplace, and Microsoft wants to do everything they can to make sure that doesn’t happen. And the way they are going to make sure it doesn’t, is to cultivate a steadily growing portfolio of titles that are released at regular intervals, much the same way they do with the games released through the Xbox LIVE Arcade.

So, what does this mean for games developed for Windows Phone 7? There will be high quality titles, developed by first party publishers as well as third-party, that feature Xbox LIVE integration (which means Achivements, etcetera), that are released in a timely fashion, and that are priced aggressively for the ecosystem. On top of that, there will be other third-party publishers that release games for Windows Phone 7 that don’t take part of the Xbox LIVE integration. So, in the face of Apple’s upcoming Game Center (which is going to have months and months of up-time before Windows Phone 7 even hits the market), how do you think this strategy fares?
