Motorola files dozens upon dozens of FCC certifications a year, so what makes us so sure this here IHD-P56LS1 is the might Atrix 4G for AT&T? Fair question: for one thing, it’s got 850 and 1900MHz 3G (or 4G, in AT&T parlance). Furthermore, it’s approved for 5GHz 802.11n WiFi, which is extraordinarily rare for a phone — and it was a feature Moto was sure to pimp during the Atrix’s CES unveiling. Oh, and finally, it’s identified in the filing as model number MB860, which would be the Atrix’s model number. So yeah, there’s one more checkmark to tick off prior to release… which hopefully won’t be too much longer, because we’re seriously jonesing to do some laptop docking.
Motorola’s i886 for Sprint’s IDEN network featuring both landscape QWERTY and standard numeric keypads bowed during CES a few days back for $79.99 after $50 rebate on a two-year contract — and as we’d observed a while back when we first saw the user’s manual, it runs a pretty convincing Android clone UI. Turns out, though, it’s less of a clone than you might think: Phone Scoop has discovered that the i886 — which doesn’t have a touchscreen — is actually running real Android (albeit without the Android Market) accompanied by generic J2ME like you’d find on your average dumbphone. If we had to guess, Motorola took advantage of Android’s status as a free, open-source platform here, tailoring it for the i886′s needs without worrying about the normal Google certification process that would’ve earned them Market access — and given the lack of a touchscreen, we’re sure they wouldn’t have been able to earn it anyway. From Moto’s perspective, it seems like a good way to get a proven, familiar platform without a lot of engineering effort — they can toss their proprietary platforms and save a little bit of cash in the process. Happy Thursday, Verizon customers! No better way to celebrate the beginning of the second half of the work week than with a couple firmware updates, we always say — and Big Red’s playing the part with new builds for the Fascinate and Droid Pro. The Fascinate update doesn’t seem to be Froyo as far as we can tell — disappointing, we know — but it’s still got a long list of improvements covering everything from Bluetooth and GPS to updated third-party apps in ROM. On the Droid Pro side, this seems to mirror the Droid 2 Global update that went out not long ago, promising improved voice quality and better global roaming performance. So go on, get your upgrade on — and let us know how it went.
To say Motorola’s had a stellar show would be a massive understatement. Betwixt the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Xoom, Droid Bionic and to a lesser extent the Cliq 2, they’ve been reborn and are the star of the show. Of course, in order to peddle your wares at CES you need a booth — the more garish the better, typically — and Moto’s is massive and bedecked and badazzled in light with more flair than you’d need to work in a place like Chotchke’s. So, we wandered about, took in the sights, the sounds, and grabbed some pics and a short vid of what we saw.
HTC’s ThunderBolt along with Motorola’s Atrix 4G and Droid Bionic might be taking the overwhelming majority of the attention here at CES over the past few days, but remember that both companies have introduced some other models that are expected to be serious midrange breadwinners for their respective carriers. One of the most obvious head-to-head matches would be the HTC EVO Shift 4G taking on the Motorola Cliq 2, both launching this month on Sprint and T-Mobile, respectively.
Motorola has just officially announced the Cliq 2. Targeting heavy media consumption and social use, the Cliq 2 will be the perfect option for any Android user.
The device sports a 3.7-inch screen and will ship with a 1GHz processor. The Cliq 2 integrates a world class Android operating system with social features as well as many business features that have been left out of feature phones.
The Cliq 2 will launch in a titanium hue with a smoke gray finish the T-Mobile network January 19th.

If this is the direction high-power smartphones are going, we like what we’re seeing. Though the software’s still a bit raw (there’s no Android Market, for example), the Droid Bionics on display here at Motorola’s CES event this evening look and feel pretty blazingly fast. A spokesman we chatted with said that Motorola is actually doing some manner of software optimization (and yes, it’ll launch with 2.2) to take advantage of the two cores out of the box, so it’s a promising start — as Jha says, it’s “2GHz of processing power.” We hope that’s true in practice!
Physically, the phone feels smooth in the same way a Droid 2 does, though a bit lighter — good news considering the LTE hardware and big display, but not entirely surprising when you take into account the lack of a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The patterned battery cover looks textured, but it’s actually quite smooth with a slight soft touch treatment. The screen looks great — in particular, the viewing angle looked superb, though all phone displays have a tendency to look a little better in this sexy lighting since they can’t wash out as easily. The Motorola XOOM has just been unveiled as the worlds first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet. The device will feature a 10.1-inch screen and will indeed ship with Google’s upcoming tablet-centric operating system.
The device looks incredibly thin, and from what we saw at the event, it will be one of the most powerful tablets on the market in 2011. Featuring a dual-core 1GHz processor, the device will first launch in a 3G version with a 4G version coming later in the year. It’s worth noting that it was said the 3G version can be easily upgraded to 4G once it’s made available.
The device will not only feature impressive specs, Android 3.0 Honeycomb has been completely redesigned for the larger screens of devices. Building upon Android it will feature both widgets and multitasking and everything we have come to expect from an Android OS.

The Motorola Atrix is proving to be an extremely impressive business device. Bridging the gap between smartphone and desktop, the device not only docks with a monitor, it can additionally dock with Motorola’s new laptop dock, ultimately making it an ultra portable powerful notebook.
The laptop dock comes in at only 13.9 mm thick and sports a full keyboard and 11.6-inch display. This dock will ship with an onboard battery that will leave your device fully charged after its use.
The dock itself has no moving parts, no hard drive and is completely ran of the Atrix itself.
There is currently no release date for the Atrix and accompanying accessories, but when it’s launched it will appear on AT&T, Bell Canada, Orange UK.
Motorola has just provided further details of their upcoming Atrix device. The phone sports a dual-core processor with a huge 1930 mAh battery and will be aimed at business users. Featuring a qHD display and fingerprint reader, the Atrix will be a very powerful device for any business user who is distancing themselves from the desktop.
It will officially be the first smartphone with that ships with real RAM making it possible to advertise as the world’s most powerful smartphone. The phone can even dock allowing it to essentially become a desktop computer. Running special Motorola WebTop when docked, the Atrix powers a full display just as a desktop would.
When docked the user is presented with options only seen on a desktop so far. Once the UI is completely changed to support the larger computer monitor, the user can utilize both the multi-touch controls as well as a mouse.
The video demo of the phone powering a full desktop display will be coming as well as the very first advertisement for the device.
