SunBook netbook ships with Pixel Qi transflective display
Posted by MobiG @ 4:56 pm

A new netbook from Clover Systems has surfaced called the SunBook. The little machine is the first 10-inch netbook to ship with the Pixel Qi transreflective display. If you have forgot what that fancy display is, the thing lets you turn the backlight off for viewing in the sunlight or any other time you want to save power.

The netbook was spied at CES by the geeks from Liliputing and they say it looks like a netbook with an e-ink screen with the backlight off. With the backlight on it looks like any other netbook. The big downside to adding the fancy screen to the netbook is cost.

The SunBook will set you back $795, most of it just for the screen. The other specs are average netbook. They include a 1024 x 600 resolution display, 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 250GB HDD. The machine can be had with 3G and 4G modems and battery life is 8-12 hours depending on the battery.

SlashGear Week in Review- Week 5 2011
Posted by MobiG @ 8:28 pm

Welcome to this week’s edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! If you are a PC hardware geek an AMD spokesman causally showed off an unannounced video card on Monday called the HD 6990. The card has dual GPUs and should be very fast. We heard a bit of early detail on the PSP2 from Nikkei that claimed the new portable would have an OLED touchscreen, 3G and a new CPU. That would make for a very impressive portable indeed.

NVIDIA will be sampling its new Tegra 3 T30/AP30 mobile quad core processors by the end of 2011. These things will bring a whole new breed of portable devices and more with loads of power. One of the coolest DIY projects I saw last week was the pedal-powered snowplow that a guy built. He used a couple old bikes and some wood to build the plow that appears to work pretty well.

The 10 billionth app was downloaded last weekend and Apple called the person who made the download to give the $10k gift card price that was offered. The catch was that the winner hung up on them. Luckily for her an Apple rep called again and she ended up with her gift. Samsung conducted a strange experiment early in the week where they launched a bunch of paper airplanes in space. They launched 200 paper planes from 36,500 meters above Berlin and each plane had a card with a text message that the folks who found it could enter online for others to read.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will cost the off-contract user $50 more on Verizon that it does on AT&T. The upside is that that extra $50 should let you talk without your call dropping if you hold your face wrong. The Acer Aspire One E100 Android netbook turned up this week and the thing dual boots Android and Windows. The netbook has a 10.1-inchscreen and is your basic netbook.

Notion Ink issued an update for the Adam tablet that was bricking some of the tablets that installed the update. The update was later pulled and only a few users were affected. It was confirmed this week that Verizon will offer a $30 unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4. The catch is that it’s a limited time offer and will go back to the normal tiered plan after a while.

NVIDIA unveiled a new video card this week called the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. The card promises to be 46% faster than the Radeon HD 6950 that is already on the market and the new GTX 560 Ti sells for about $250. Ben Heck took a flashlight with a crank, a USB charger, and some geek mojo to create a cool kinetic charger. The charger puts power into the battery of your phone as you turn the crank.

The tiny Compulab Trim Slice nettop turned up this week with Tegra 2 inside for desktop PC use. This thing would make a really good HTPC; it looks more like a memory card reader than a computer to me. Details on several new Samsung smartphones turned up this week including the Samsung Galaxy Ace, Fit, Gio, and Mini. The Ace is the coolest of them all with a 3.5-inch screen, 800MHz processor and more.

The HTC Facebook phone that we keep hearing about has been tipped to land at MWC next month. The phone will reportedly use the Facebook color scheme, branding, and push the Facebook news feed. An awesome 12-foot long DIY LED matrix display turned up mid-week. The thing is really cool and uses 512 blue LEDs to show your text message.

A Verizon BlackBerry outage rolled on mid-week and to start with the blame was placed on an update by Verizon. Apparently the outage spanned a number of states and users that were affected only received email in batches an hour or so apart. The Sony Xperia Play was the subject of a pre-release preview video this week. This is the PlayStation phone and the thing looks really cool.

Thursday the Sony PlayStation Suite and PS Store for Android devices landed. The store is for Android 2.3 and up devices and has a lot of cool games for mobile gamers to download and enjoy. The Sony NGP “Next Generation Portable” went official this week. The device is the PSP2 we have been hearing about for a while and has an ARM Cortex A9 processor, 5-inch OLED screen, and a lot more. This should be one seriously cool portable game console.

A “secret” AT&T unlimited data plan is available to keep iPhone users from migrating to Verizon. One user is claiming that when he called AT&T and threatened to go to Verizon they moved him to an unlimited data plan. Hulu is reportedly in talks within the video streaming site to change from a free offering that it is right now to a virtual cable operator where we would all have to pay to use the streaming service.

Scosche shipped its new version of the flipSYNC called the flipSYNC II this week. It is available for USB charging devices and Apple gear for about $20 and the new version has a larger USB plug. The dorkiest iPad accessory ever turned up late in the week called the Assero Defender. It’s like one of those reverse backpacks parents use to carry babies, but the Defender is for your iPad.

Details for pre-orders of the Verizon iPhone 4 were offered Thursday. Verizon is going for AT&T’s throat and is offering some big discounts if you trade in an AT&T iPhone. A 16GB iPhone 4 from AT&T will get you $280 off your Verizon iPhone. Thursday we heard that the Sony NGP console would come in both 3G and WiFi only versions. That is good news since many people have no desire for 3G if they will only use it in the house.

The FCC posted up the teardown pics of the Notion Ink Adam Friday. The Adam the FCC had used what appear to be handmade connections leading some to wonder about build quality. We know the specs on the Sony NPG, but we still don’t know the price. Some speculation has been that the console might cost around $600. Sony has said the NGP won’t be $599, but still hasn’t offered pricing yet.

Microsoft is reportedly working towards 16-core Atom processors. The 16-core Atom would apparently be an alternative to traditional CPUs inside servers. Thanks for reading this week’s edition, see you next time!

Acer Aspire One E100 Education netbook dual-boots Windows & Android
Posted by MobiG @ 1:44 pm

Acer has unveiled its latest netbook, the Aspire One E100 Education, and as the name suggests it’s targeted at classrooms. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 ultraportable dual-boots Windows 7 and Android – the latter being positioned as an instant-on option for quick browsing – and can be specified with a rubberized coating for bump protection; there’s also a pocket into which a student can slot their name card, so that multiple E100 units don’t get confused.

Other specs include a 250GB hard-drive, 1GB of RAM and WiFi b/g/n, together with Bluetooth 2.1 and a multi-format memory card reader. It uses an unspecified Intel Atom processor, weighs about a pound and is 24mm thick; Acer reckons the battery is good for 8hrs of runtime.

As for software, there’s apparently a variety of free education apps on offer, and Acer also preloads its Classroom Manager app which allows a teacher to remotely interact with multiple student systems. No word on pricing at this stage.

Dell Inspiron Duo hybrid hits Three in February
Posted by MobiG @ 1:30 pm

UK carrier Three has announced that, as of February, it will be offering the Dell Inspiron Duo convertible hybrid netbook/tablet. Based on Intel’s dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard-drive, the Windows 7 based Inspiron Duo has a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen that can rotate in its bezel to face forward, for regular notebook use, or outward, to be used as a tablet.

As we found, though, the extra weight and bulk of the rest of the netbook – including a reasonable keyboard – does remove some of the mobility friendliness of the Inspiron Duo. We’re presuming Three will be offering a 3G-enabled version of the hybrid, though it’s unclear whether that means an integrated modem or an external one (either USB or mobile hotspot).

No word on pricing or specific launch dates at this stage, though we’re assuming it won’t be long before we hear more. More details on the Dell Inspiron Duo in our hands-on report.

SaberTooth ZF Turbo ZIF 1.8? SSD for notebooks debuts
Posted by MobiG @ 3:02 pm

Active Media Products has announced a new SSD that is a replacement for notebooks and netbooks that use 1.8-inch storage drives inside. The new drive is called the SaberTooth ZF Turbo ZIF SSD. The storage drive connects to machines using parallel ATA (PATA/IDE) ZIF interface.

The drive is very thin at 5mm thick and comes in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities. AMP says that the new SSD is a good upgrade for MacBook Air, HP Inspiron Mini 12, and other notebooks including some from Sony. The new SSD uses MLC flash and has special power saving circuits to increase battery life for the notebooks it is used in.

Other features of the SSD include ECC error correction, bad bit management, and the drive ships with the screwdriver needed for installation and an installation guide. The drive will work in most computers that use 1.8-inch 40-pin ZIF cables. The 32GB SSD is $129.95, the 64GB version is $189.95, and the 128GB version is $349.95.

Acer deny netbook phase-out: Tablets “will find their space”
Posted by MobiG @ 8:17 pm

Acer has gone on the netbook defensive after comments from a Taiwan sales manager were interpreted as suggesting the company was planning to phase out the budget ultraportables in favor of tablets. According to the PR, Acer expects tablets “will find their space next to netbooks and notebooks, without taking over.”

As for Sandy Bridge, Acer are playing down suggestions that they are planning two to three Android slates based on the latest Intel Core processors. “Devices based on Sandy Bridge are not foreseen yet” the company insists.

Press Release:

Acer to increase its presence on mobile market investing on tablet devices: netbooks will be not phased out

Manno, January 19th 2011 – According to recent statement from Sales Manager based in Taiwan, Acer Inc. confirms that the company is not aiming to phase out netbooks in favor of tablets.

Mobility, which has always been part of Acer’s DNA, finds a new form of expression in the range of tablets on offer, which feature various display sizes and models designed to fit different kinds of usage scenarios. Acer recognizes that the computer market is changing: As PCs are no longer used to only create content but are more and more becoming consumption tools, new devices and new form factors are appearing. This means the range of devices available to users is getting wider and tablets are just another piece of the mosaic. Therefore they will find their space next to netbooks and notebooks, without taking over.

Technological developments are changing the way we interact with devices. No longer a single product but a multitude of instruments with diverse form factors and display sizes designed to meet the specific connection need of that particular moment, allowing the digital individual to stay connected and interact with his world, anytime, anywhere.

Acer’s offer includes a 10.1” Android tablet, for a superb mobile and home entertainment experience, a 7” Android Tablet, the quintessence of mobility and a 10.1” Windows Tablet for the maximum of versatility in a tablet form factor. For the moment devices based on Sandy Bridge are not foreseen yet.

ASUS Sirocco netbook is Eee PC 1015PW?
Posted by MobiG @ 6:04 pm

ASUS’ upcoming “Sirocco” Eee PC may well be the the Eee PC 1005PW 1015PW, according to the latest tips, with the dune-textured netbooks getting an unofficial pre-unveil preview. According to imidoresc, the ASUS Eee PC 1015PW Sirocco will be a 10.1-inch WSVGA netbook with Intel’s Atom N550 processor and up to 10hrs battery life.

There’s also a choice of 250GB or 320GB hard-drives, Bluetooth 3.0 and a -.3-megapixel webcam. We’re guessing on WiFi b/g/n and the usual trio of USB 2.0 ports, single ethernet, audio in/out and a memory card reader as well. It’s expected to weigh around 1.25kg.

Pricing and availability haven’t been revealed, but this is looking pretty mainstream for a current netbook, and not the hurricane ultraportable the “Sirocco” name led us to hope for. We’ll find out all the details on Wednesday when the netbook is announced officially.

ASUS Eee PC Sirocco to deliver hurricane speed?
Posted by MobiG @ 1:56 pm

It seems like ages since we’ve had a good ASUS netbook tease – the company has been so busy concentrating on its Eee Pad Slider and Transform, and Eee Slate EP121 tablets that new budget ultraportables have almost fallen at the wayside. Now ASUS is promising a new Eee PC model at an event this Wednesday, the ASUS Eee PC Sirocco.

“Making waves” the teaser invitation suggests, complete with a sand dune background; Sirocco, meanwhile, is the name of a Mediterranean wind that can reach hurricane speeds. It seems likely that ASUS will be prioritizing both performance and styling with this particular netbook iteration, perhaps with a dune-textured lid.

As for processor choice, ASUS has kept a finger in three pies of late, announcing machines running Intel, AMD and NVIDIA Tegra 2 chips. Any of the three could be found in a netbook, so we’ll have to wait until later in the week to find out what exactly makes the Eee PC Sirocco so special.

HP webOS netbooks tipped for phone/tablet ecosystem
Posted by MobiG @ 1:07 pm

HP has suggested that webOS-based netbooks may be in the pipeline, along with smartphones and tablets. According to a webOS carrier training site, HP’s master plan for the Palm-sourced platform is a single OS running on phone, slate and netbook, which “all talked to each other and shared information.”

“That’s hot. Love it. Why can’t I do all that stuff on my PC?

Maybe you will. That’s the big idea.

If I could run webOS on my phone and a slate and a netbook…

And they all talked to each other and shared information.

A friendly little product family…

That connects you to the world in amazing new ways.

I’m in. Let’s go

Today, let’s start with the phones. Tomorrow will come soon enough.” HP training site

The site suggests that HP will “start with the phones” and that “tomorrow will come soon enough” for other devices, though the company has said that it is pushing ahead with potential tablets this year. Whether that means we can also expect a netbook later in 2011 is unclear; the Palm smartphone range is arguably stagnating, and would likely be HP’s first port of call for refreshing their acquisition.

However, with HP’s February 9 event fast approaching, and HP VP Todd Bradley promising “a breadth of products” that day, it’s possible we’ll see at least the early stages of a multi-device strategy. That was originally expected to comprise phones and tablets; now it seems we’ll have full QWERTY keyboards in the mixture as well.
