As you may have gathered from our MacBook Air 2010 review, the new Apple ultraportable is one fast-booting machine. LaptopMag decided to see just how fast in comparison with one of the nippiest top-tier Windows 7 notebooks around right now, Sony’s dual-SSD VAIO Z, and the advantage is most definitely in the MacBook Air’s court.
Video demo after the cut
In fact, it’s pretty darn fast compared to Apple’s other recent SSD product, the iPad. A cold boot takes just 15 seconds, while resuming from sleep mode is a matter of seconds. When the biggest delay to getting started is waiting for your WiFi to reconnect, you know your laptop is doing something right.
Asus has pulled the wraps off some new notebooks aimed at business users called the B series. The series includes the B53J, B53F, B43J, and B43F notebooks. All of the machines in the line get the cool Boston-Power Sonata batteries that are guaranteed to charge to at least 80% capacity for three years.
The 53J is a 15.6-inch machine with ATI Radeon 5470 GPU, Core i5-520M or i7-620M CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB 7200 rpm HDD. The 53F has a Core i5-520M CPU, 15.6-inch screen, Intel GMA HD graphics, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB 5400rpm HDD.
The B43J machine has all the same features as the 53J with the exception of a 14.1-inch screen. The 43F is just like the 53F again with the substitution of a 14.1-inch screen. The machines also all have a matte finish screen, which means less glare.
According to research firm Techaisle there will be 36 million netbooks purchased by consumers and businesses in 2010. That number would be a growth of 13% compared to 2009. The penetration of the netbook in business is predicted to be 5.3% and in the consumer market is will hit 1.8%.
The company thinks that there will be a short shift away from netbooks in some established markets and in a few emerging markets as well. However, after 2010 the company predicts that the growth of netbooks will slow until 2013 to 2014.
What exactly is going to happen then isn’t mentioned. As always the company says that the netbook is a good choice for the student on the move and for businesses looking for an easily portable machine possibly as an add on to a notebook already in use.
If you are a Canadian notebook fan and liked the Gateway ID series of notebook that the US got back in June you can now get them in Canada. Gateway announced late last week that the notebooks were now for sale to Canucks.
The new ID series that has landed in Canada includes the Gateway ID49, a 14-inch HD resolution Ultrabright LED backlit notebook weighing in at 5.07 pounds. The Gateway ID59 is a 15.6-inch HD Ultrabright LED backlit machine that weighs 5.5 pounds.
The final machine is the Gateway ID79 with a 17.3-inch screen and weighing 7.17 pounds. The 49 and 59 machines are only an inch thick while the larger 79 is 1.5-inches thick. Some of the machines feature NVIDIA Optimus technology and more. Pricing is CAD $609.99 to CAD $1049.99 for the notebooks.
HP has updated that cool EliteBook 8740W notebook computer that we talked about before with a new GPU offering from NVIDIA. The new GPU option is the NVIDIA Quadro FX5000M.
The new GPU has loads of power with 320 cores and 2GB of memory just for the GPU. Other features of the notebook include a 17-inch screen, up to 16GB of RAM, and Intel Core i7 options all the way to the powerful Extreme Edition.
The notebook is ruggedized and has an aluminum chassis in gunmetal color, though it looks black to my eyes. The machine’s price with the new GPU is unknown, but these are far from budget notebooks. The 8740W starts at a price of $2676 and you can expect the rig fully optioned with the new GPU to cost much more than that.
ASUS has a thing for bamboo-fused electronics. They’ve been doing this kind of thing for a few years now, dating all the way back to 2007, before some other models became available for pre-order courtesy of Amazon. And now, two new notebooks are currently available thanks to Best Buy. The two new models, the U43JC and U43F each boast a 14-inch display, and have the same aesthetically pleasing approach to adding bamboo to their framework as the other models in the past have.
The U43JC will cost you $999.99, and it’s powered by Intel’s Core i5 processor at 2.26GHz. There’s 4GB of RAM tucked away inside as well. As for the hard drive, that hard-earned money will get you a whopping 640GB of storage. As for graphics, you’ll be able to take advantage of NVIDIA’s GeForce 310M graphics chipset. Other features include the standard ports, and included facial recognition software (so there’s obviously a webcam, too). Best of all though, is the fact that Optimus graphics switching is also included with this model, which should help bolster that battery. Though, it isn’t bad, as ASUS tags it at 5 hours and 10 minutes off of a full charge.
As for the U43F, it’s basically the same model as the U43JC, but it loses a few key features. It does have integrated graphics, but not the same power as the higher-priced model. Other than that, though, it would seem that only the price really differentiates these two pieces of notebook tech. The U43F will cost you $950. As of right now, both models are labeled as back-ordered, but that won’t stop you from ordering them, right? After all, they should be shipping to your doorstep by the end of the month.
The Samsung Q line-up of notebooks hasn’t been a big secret, but as of today we can finally say that the series has a somewhat firm release date when it comes to those in the United Kingdom who might be interested. Samsung also announced that the Q530, Q430, and Q330 will be heading to other international markets as well. At the top of the line, the Q530 is by far the most appealing of the set.
As Samsung puts it, the Q series of notebooks is designed to put as much power into a pretty package as they can get. We can’t say for sure if they’re trying to be budget conscious, either, but with the features herein, we’d have to guess that these won’t go as cheap as some would like. The Q530, resting as the king of the Q series king of the hill, features a 15.6-inch LED backlit screen, with a 16:9 aspect ratio. You get to choose from Intel’s Core i5 or i3 processors. You also get GeForce GT330M 1GB DDR3 GPU.
But what makes it better are the little things. For example, you get built-in WiFi, but it also supports ad-hoc, which means you’ll be able to transfer files between two WiFi enabled devices. (No, not revolutionary, but still good enough to put on paper.) It also features DLNA, Bluetooth 3.0, built-in webcam, memory card reader, USB and HDMI ports, and the standard optical drive. There’s also Samsung’s Extended Battery Life mechanism, which means you’ll get upwards of 7 hours of life out of the battery.
As for the other two notebooks, the Q430 is essentially the same as the Q530, but it features a smaller display. At only 14-inches, it could be more of what people are looking for, at least in the travel department. But, the Q330 features a 13.3-inch screen, and it’s also powered by Intel’s Core processors. Tucked away inside is NVIDIA’s GeForce 310M GPU. No final word on pricing, but as we get closer to August, we’re sure that will break in due time.
If you are in the market for laptop that has a screen larger than the average netbook and is still priced in the netbook realm the Acer Aspire AS1551-5448 has landed at Amazon for purchase. The little notebook has an 11.6-inch screen and is powered by an AMD Athlon II Neo CPU.
The machine is available for $549.99 and that little screen supports HD resolution and is LED backlit for better battery life. The machine is about three pounds and is an inch thick. It features a memory card reader, three USB ports, and a 320GB HDD.
That HDD spins at 5400 RPM and the machine has 4GB of RAM. The Neo CPU inside the notebook runs at 1.5GHz and has dual cores. Graphics duties are handled by a Radeon HD 4225 GPU. The notebook measures 8.03″ x 11.22″ x 1.1″ and the exact weight is 3.09 pounds.
Back in early May, we posted up a hands-on video of the new HP Envy 14 and Envy 17 notebooks. We noted at the time that the Envy 14 was set to ship on June 27. With yesterday being the 27th, the HP Envy 14 is now up for order on the HP website.
The machine starts at $1099.99 and has a 1.1-inch thick profile and the weight starts at 5.25 pounds. The machine uses Windows 7 Home Premium and has an Intel Core i3 , i5, and i7 CPU options. The screen is 14.5-inches wide and LED backlit with a resolution of 1600 x 900.
The notebook also has an ATI Radeon HD 5650 graphics card with 1GB of RAM. The machine has 4GB of RAM inside and can be expanded to 8GB. Other features include a slot load DVD burner, backlit keyboard, 8-cell battery, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI 1.3c output and more.
