Notion Ink Apps Ported to GTab
Posted by MobiG @ 9:35 pm

For those seeking an alternative custom ROM to boost speed and improve user interface of the Viewsonic GTab, there’s some good news. Developers over at XDA have successfully ported over a portion of Notion Ink ‘s Eden firmware.

According to postings in the XDA-Developers forum, the developer has so far ported over 7 applications, including the Notion Ink Canvas, Calculator, Browser, Calendar, Keyboard, Sniffer, Mail, and tablet version of QuickOffice. In theory, the apps should work on any ROM since they are Android based.

Adam gets Android Market as Notion Ink slate rooted
Posted by MobiG @ 1:07 pm

There comes a time in every Android device’s life when it gets rooted and comes of age; it’s now the turn of Notion Ink‘s Adam. Production versions have only been with buyers for a few days, but already the NotionInkHacks team has rooted the Tegra 2 slate, come up with a custom ROM and added in Android Market access, among other things.

There’s also the keyboard from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, along with a tweak to the screen buffer rate which promises to make it smoother. A new home switcher and Live Wallpaper support have been enabled, and the official YouTube app loaded. In return you have to give up support for OTA official updates, but the offline versions should work instead.

Notion Ink Battles Insinuations of Unevenly Bright Screens, Broken Cameras, Customer Service Stalls
Posted by MobiG @ 5:36 am

It appears, if a few folks over at NotionAddicts messageboard are any indication, that Notion Ink is facing some heavy allegations from the first round of pre-order customers. Amongst these allegations are that Notion Ink is purposely stalling out on customers looking for refunds so that their 7 day return period will expire and it’ll be more difficult (and more costly) to get their due exchange.

It is the story of Rambler (aka Rambler358) that sparked this whole conversation, his thread covering the receiving of the Adam tablet all the way to his current predicament: waiting for Notion Ink to respond to his several attempts at getting a full refund, frustrated because they’ve provided him little to no help in the issues he sought to fix: a physically broken camera, a blotchy screen, and broken links to help files throughout the system. Check out a lengthened and more detailed account of this situation over on Android Community

Then we’ve got to ask – does it seem normal to you that this tablet has seen so much good press leading up to its release, followed by so much bad press after its pre-release has been sent out? Or do you think that most devices have these sorts of problems, and its just the fact that Notion Ink has been so seemingly open about their process that the bad press seems so surprising and newsworthy?

Viewsonic GTablet gets UI overhaul with Notion Ink’s Eden [Video]
Posted by MobiG @ 3:10 pm

Viewsonic’s GTablet didn’t exactly impress early-adopters with its stock interface, but it seems Notion Ink may have inadvertently come to the rescue. xda-developers modder roebeet has taken the Notion Ink ROMs and whipped up a custom Eden build for the GTablet, putting the three-pane UI and slick browser onto the rival slate.

Video demo after the cut

While you might think that Notion Ink would be less than impressed by the port, in actual fact it seems they’re relatively unconcerned. In his latest blog post CEO Rohan Shravan says “XDA community we love you!” seemingly in reference to the speedy hack.

Notion Ink Adam’s email app code origins in question [Updated]
Posted by MobiG @ 9:23 pm

Notion Ink has been accused of basing its custom email app for the Adam tablet on open-source K-9 Mail without giving credit to the original developers. Coder Jesse Vincent spotted his K-9 Mail code was used as the foundation for Adam’s three-pane email system, but that no mention of his work had been made in the app’s About box.

Update: Notion Ink official comments after the cut

The Notion Ink email app has been skinned to suit the rest of the start-up’s Eden UI and multitasking system; you can see the three-pane system demonstrated in our hands-on from CES 2011. However, if the underlying code is based on K-9′s software, then a mention of Vincent would be at the very least a courtesy. It’s unclear at this stage how this impacts – if at all – the Apache2 license, which states that any derivative works must contain “all copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices from the Source form of the Work.”

For his part, Vincent says he would be happy to work together with Notion Ink, as long as they restored the credit in the About box. We’re waiting to hear back from Notion Ink about the issue, and will update when we know more.

[via Twitter]

Update: Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan has given us the following comment:

“Mail’d is indeed based on K9 and is also open source application. The credits and other information are mentioned in the source code which will be released soon.

Jesse and Notion Ink, both have huge synergies and right now in talks for possible area we might end up working together is on Mail’d for Honeycomb! We are very excited on this.

Interestingly Mail’d does not come with any About App box, and does not violate anything as you have suggested in your blog. The update will bring about section in Mail’d as well.”

As we made clear in our original article, it was uncertain whether any part of the Apache 2 license had been affected; this was more a matter of attribution, and we’re pleased to see Vincent’s work on K-9 will be more obviously flagged up in future releases. Vincent himself says “that it looks like the attribution issue in Mail’d was an oversight more than anything else” and is happy with the outcome.

Notion Ink Adam update yanked after tablets bricked
Posted by MobiG @ 1:54 pm

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be the very earliest of early-adopters, as some Notion Ink pre-order customers have discovered. Unboxing joy turned to bricked-tablet misery after the recommended software update accidentally locked up the Adam slate altogether; Notion Ink has now pulled the update, and there are reflashing instructions at Notion Ink Fan.

At an early count, it doesn’t seem like more than a handful of users were affected – after all, the first Adam units only started arriving on doorsteps yesterday – but it’s a disappointing first experience for new owners. An updated version of the firmware is apparently in the works, and by all accounts Notion Ink’s customer support has been on the ball in dealing with issues.

First Notion Ink Adam pre-orders arriving today
Posted by MobiG @ 6:51 pm

The first Notion Ink Adam pre-orders are seemingly finding their way to customers, with at least one UK buyer of the Android slate having received his tablet today. Documented over at Notion Ink Fan, Shane Trafford reportedly gave his delivery guy “a big hug” when he handed over the slate.

As we’ve already seen from the official unboxing, Adam comes in a box which converts into a desk stand for the tablet. There’s also a software update waiting, which apparently took around 20 minutes to download; no word on what sort of connection that was over, nor what new functionality it delivered.

So, it seems the much-anticipated Adam is finally landing. If you’ve pre-ordered and are waiting for your tablet, let us know in the comments; Shane’s was a WiFi model with the Pixel Qi display.

Notion Ink Adam gets official unboxing
Posted by MobiG @ 12:54 pm

After announcing earlier this week that its Adam tablet was finally shipping, Notion Ink has shared an official unboxing with some of the first units to land with them. It certainly seems like the company has put some thought into the packaging experience – something Apple has shown us is particularly important – and the box even converts into a desk-stand for you to prop Adam up.

There’s also the news that a firmware update for the tablet is already available, and will be ready to install as soon as the Adam comes out of the box. No word on what that offers, however; we’re presuming something to do with Notion Ink’s own Eden UI and multitasking system, rather than the underlying Android OS itself.

As for when pre-order customers can expect their slate, the boxed production units have to go from China to the main Notion Ink logistics center in Hong Kong, and then from there to buyers. No word on exactly how long that will take; you should eventually have tracking details in your order status page.

Notion Ink Adam ships today
Posted by MobiG @ 1:03 pm

Notion Ink has announced that shipments of the Adam tablet will be going out from today, after reportedly clearing the FCC over the weekend. According to the company, as well as those pre-order customers who see January estimates in their shipping status, Notion Ink is also hoping to get February deliveries out early – in the last week of this month, in fact.

The different in dates is down to some extra padding Notion Ink added into the estimates, to give them some flexibility while waiting for the FCC. According to previous reports, the FCC clearance wasn’t delayed, only the granting of approval numbers which Notion Ink needed to print onto the slates themselves.
