Skype for Symbian S60 slides into Nokia’s Ovi Store
Posted by MobiG @ 2:26 pm

The latest version of Skype’s mobile VoIP app for Symbian S60 devices (aka Symbian^1) has been added to the Nokia Ovi Store, making free calls over WiFi or 3G a slightly easier possibility for the millions of handset owners out there.  In fact, there are over 200 million Nokia phones worldwide, and with the Skype app they’ll be able to send SMS messages, share images and other files, use IM and of course make free or low-cost Skype calls.

The Skype for Symbian app is, of course, not new, and has been available from Skype’s website for some time now; in fact, since Skype pulled official support for their Windows Mobile the Symbian version is one of just two cellphone apps from the company (the other being their iPhone app).  The hope, though, is that this more straightforward on-device access to the app will promote not only Skype but use of the Ovi Store.

Press Release:

Skype now available for Nokia smartphones in Ovi Store

More than 200 million smartphone users worldwide now have Skype at their fingertips

3 March 2010, London, UK : Skype and Nokia today jointly announced the release of Skype for Symbian, a Skype client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian platform, the world’s most popular smartphone platform. Skype for Symbian will allow Nokia smartphone users worldwide to use Skype on the move, over either a WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G). It is now downloadable for free from the Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile content.

Skype for Symbian enables Nokia smartphone users to:
· Make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world*
· Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad
· Send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
· Share pictures, videos and other files.
· Receive calls to their existing online number
· See when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
· Easily import names and numbers from the phone’s address book

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian ^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform. Skype will soon introduce this client to Symbian mobile devices from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.

“Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users,” said Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones, Nokia.

Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide** will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype’s relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer.”

The initial Skype for Symbian application is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.

For more information on Skype for Symbian, including the latest supported handset list, at http://www.skype.com/go/symbian.

* Skype recommends use of an unlimited data plan to avoid incurring additional charges from operators. Users should also be aware that extra charges may apply if they use Skype over a mobile data connection when abroad.

Nokia adds Skype to Ovi Store, foreshadows death of regular phone calls
Posted by MobiG @ 12:21 pm
Skype for Symbian. A freely downloadable application that allows you to converse with your Skype-equipped friends over a WiFi or 3G connection. Seriously, why would you ever make another cellular call again? Nokia's just announced the addition of the online communications client to its Ovi Store, meaning that now more than 200 million users worldwide have access to essentially free calls over their beloved Symbian S60 5th handsets. You knew there was a reason to stay loyal to that stale user experience and here it is. There's not much else to say here, we're off to sell whatever stock we have in mobile network operators while you should click the source links for the full list of compatible handsets. High fives all around.

Samsung LED 7000 and 8000 series TVs get Skype
Posted by MobiG @ 3:04 pm

Earlier this week I mentioned that Samsung would be sending its new C7000, C8000, and C9000 3D TVs to Europe starting in March. Similar sets will be shipping in the US as well and today a new feature of some of the 2010 Samsung TVs have surfaced.

sears3dtv sg1

Skype has announced that the Samsung LED 7000 and 8000 series TVs will feature Skype software installed allowing the user to make video and voice calls directly through the TV. The software will first ship on Samsung sets in Korea and will be rolled out to other countries during the first half of the year.

The needed camera for making video calls is not included with the TV. The sets are designed to allow the user to connect a FREETALK TV Camera to the set. The camera is made by ISS and can be picked up on the Skype store. Skype isn’t clear in this announcement if the 7000 and 8000 series sets that are getting this feature are the C7000 and C8000 units that will be turning up in Europe.

Skype pull Windows Mobile VoIP app
Posted by MobiG @ 2:20 pm

Skype have pulled support for Windows Mobile, leaving only iPhone and Symbian versions of their mobile VoIP app.  According to Skype’s FAQ on the subject, the company “felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile were not offering the best possible Skype experience”; there are also hints that Skype may be planning a new version to replace it, however.

Skype for Windows Mobile

“We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones” Skype FAQ

One interpretation of their quote is that they are looking to port the iPhone version across to other platforms, potentially including the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform set for release later in 2010.  Of course, that’s no good if you want to run Skype on your WinMo device now; handily there’s still a hidden page where you can (for the moment) download the file.

Verizon to allow unlimited Skype calling over 3G starting next month
Posted by MobiG @ 8:34 pm
We may be way off base here, but we're pretty sure the game just got upended. Days after AT&T appeased the masses by finally enabling 3G streaming over the iPhone's SlingPlayer app, Verizon Wireless has delivered some big gargantuan news of its own. Starting next month, all Verizon Wireless customers with smartphones (and an accompanying data plan) will be able to make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls to any user in the world over its 3G network, which is something that AT&T users have been able to do since last autumn. Let us repeat that: VZW, which is known historically as one of the most controlling carriers in this great nation, is opening up its 3G network for limitless Skype calling. The forthcoming Skype Mobile application will also support Skype Out calling, instant messaging between Skype users and an ability to "remain always connected... to see friends' online presence." Nine smartphones will be compatible at launch (the full list is after the break), and we're guessing that more will be added in due time. Giddy yet?

magicJack plan standalone VoIP phone, BB/iPhone apps; CEO slams netTALK rivals
Posted by MobiG @ 6:03 pm

magicjack founderIn a world of over-zealous PR and media-cautious executives, magicJack CEO Dan Borislow is a breath of fresh air.  In a recent interview with Laptop, Borislow blows off speculation of the legality of the company’s recently-announced femtocell and tips an upcoming Skype-like standalone phone, but saves some choice words – “It’s a piece of sh*t … it’s run by a bunch of fly-by-nights with no assets” – for recently-launched rival service netTALK.

Asked about the magicJack femtocell – which uses wireless frequencies already licensed to carriers – Borislow suggests that there are various legal loopholes which can be taken advantage of.  These include the FCC’s unlicensed transmissions regulations, and while there are restrictions on range that shouldn’t, Borislow insists, effect the femtocell’s use.  It’s expected to arrive in Q2 2010 priced the same as the existing magicJack ($39.95).

As for the standalone phone, Borislow reckons “it will be six times cheaper [than a standalone Skype phone] and the quality will be significantly better”.  It’ll be followed in late-Q3 with BlackBerry and iPhone magicJack VoIP apps, apparently.  magicJack recently shifted all call logs and contacts details into cloud storage rather than on the adapter itself, so each of the different products – softphone, standalone phone, femtocell or original adapter – will be able to access them.  Of course, it’s Borislow’s fighting words against netTALK that are most entertaining, and the outspoken CEO reckons his rivals “will be bankrupt soon”.

LG LCD HDTV CES 2010 range revealed: 3D-ready flagship Infinia LE9500
Posted by MobiG @ 12:12 am

LG’s CES 2010 LCD HDTV line-up may not be quite as technologically impressive as Toshiba’s CELL-packing ZX900, but it certainly dwarfs it in terms of sheer number of models.  The company have announced a full 39 different HDTVs, ranging from the entry-level LD350 which kicks off at a modest 19-inches, through to the Infinia LE9500 flagship with up to 55-inch panels, skinny 8.5mm bezels, Full HD 1080p, Skype videocalls (assuming you plug in a webcam), 3D-ready support and streaming media from Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, Napster and Yahoo! Widgets.

All of LG’s LED models also support DLNA streaming via ethernet, and the company will also happily sell you a USB WiFI dongle so you can cut that network cord.  LG’s NetCast sets, meanwhile, will work with the company’s Wireless Media Hub, capable of streaming 1080p up to 98 feet; again, you’ll need to buy that separately.

The LE9500 also gets LG’s “magic wand” remote, which responds to movement and gestures, and various models have USB ports for playing digital content from attached storage and PMPs.  No pricing or availability for any of the sets at present.

Press Release:

LG ELECTRONICS REDEFINES HOME ENTERTAINMENT EXPECTATIONS WITH BROAD LINE OF STUNNING, SLIM LED AND LCD HDTVs

New LED Technology Combined with Local Dimming Enhances Picture Quality, Black Levels and Utilizes Less Power

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2010 – (Virtual Press Office) – INFINIA, an innovative new family of LED LCD HDTVs from LG Electronics that delivers “freedom through infinite possibilities,” highlights the company’s 2010 lineup of LED LCD HDTVs introduced here today at the International Consumer Electronics Show (Booth #8205).

LG INFINIA HDTVs (the LE9500, LE8500 and LE7500 series) combine a slim design and thin bezel with enhanced connectivity and abundant content options. Leading the way to the ultimate home entertainment experience, the 55- and 47-inch class* LE9500 sets will be LG’s first 3D-ready models available in the United States.

INFINIA is the flagship of LG’s 41-model LED LCD HDTV line – six new series of LED LCD HDTVs and five new series of LCD HDTVs. Leading these introductions are two new LED technologies – Full LED Slim and LED Plus – that provide cutting-edge picture quality. The unique backlight structure on its Full LED Slim models (LE9500 and LE8500) allows for the INFINIA line’s ultra-slim depth without sacrificing picture quality. Together, these features provide consumers with infinite possibilities in home entertainment.

“We’re removing barriers to entertainment with very slim LED LCD TVs that couple wireless connectivity with the most access to online content,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “With seamless connectivity and limitless content, LG INFINIA is resetting the standards for design and entertainment as LED LCD TVs are expected to grow to more than 20 percent of the market this year.”

“Consumers will no longer have to compromise on picture quality in order to enjoy an ultra-slim design. Together this new Full LED Slim technology and our wireless connectivity options allow consumers to ‘live borderless’ with the ultimate in content access and convenient installation,” Reiner added.

LG’s new Full LED Slim technology elevates picture quality with a slim LED structure that supports detailed local dimming of up to 240 addressable segments (on the 55-inch class LE9500), resulting in an HDTV that provides the deeper black levels and uniform picture quality which typically could not be achieved on an ultra-thin set.

The LE9500 series cabinet depth is only .92 inches with a bezel width of only 8.5mm. LG’s LED Plus technology (available on the LE7500 and LE5500 series), also improves picture quality and energy efficiency by adding a basic local dimming capability of up to 16 addressable segments.

The LE9500, LE8500 and LE7500 were all recognized with CES 2010 Innovations Awards, including the “Best of Innovations” distinction in the Online Audio/Video Content category for the LE9500.

Shattering Expectations
Broadening consumer entertainment options, LG’s latest series of HDTVs affords consumers superior picture quality, advanced energy saving options and flexible access to content-on-demand. LG’s LED LCD HDTVs challenge consumers’ current perceptions of home entertainment by illustrating what’s possible with superior display technology.

LG’s Full LED Slim series (models LE9500 and LE8500) for example, join an elite group of LED LCD HDTVs that have achieved THX Display Certification* – the industry standard for having the correct gamma, luminance, and color temperature. This certification demonstrates that select series of LG HDTVs can recreate the cinema experience at home, making the picture resemble movie theatre quality. To date, LG is the only manufacturer who has attained this designation for LCD TV in the U.S. market. LG is also the first manufacturer to include the “THX Bright Room” setting on its LED LCD HDTVs. This new feature to the THX certification program optimizes the contrast, gamma and other settings for watching movies in rooms with a lot of ambient light.

LG’s exclusive Full LED Slim technology includes detailed local dimming capability, but also enables the LE9500 and LE8500 to achieve a slim depth usually limited to conventional edge-lit models. This unique technology makes it possible for these two models to achieve the picture quality worthy of THX Display Certification and helps minimize the front bezel of the TV. This works with the single, edge-to-edge panel of glass to create a design, perfect for any home environment. Boasting a thin bezel of only 8.5mm, the LE9500 brings advanced technology into the home without being obtrusive. Available in 55-and 47-inch class sizes*, this series also incorporates TruMotion 480Hz for reduced motion blur during fast moving action sequences.

Connectivity
LG’s full line of LED LCD HDTVs ? series LE9500, LE8500, LE7500, LE5500 and LE5400 (in screen sizes 32-inch class and above) ? boast a connectivity package with a variety of entertainment options, including NetCast Entertainment Access™. With NetCast, consumers can access the following content sites for an almost endless array of entertainment options**:
• Skype™: Newly added in 2010, this allows consumers to make free video and voice calls over the Internet to family members and friends (separate camera and other equipment needed).
• Netflix™: Updated with Netflix 2.0, consumers can stream thousands of movies without a PC.
• VUDU™: Allows consumers to instantly buy or rent from an extensive library of movies and TV titles, including a catalog of more than 3,000 high-definition movies – with no monthly fees or additional hardware.
• YouTube™: Offers the ability to instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet (without a personal computer).
• Napster™: Now Napster subscribers can enjoy unlimited on-demand streaming music from millions of songs on their NetCast TV.
• Yahoo! Widgets™: Enables access to various applications called TV Widgets that allow viewers to interact with popular Internet services and online media through applications specifically tailored to the needs of the watcher, such as up-to-the minute Yahoo! News, Weather and Finance, and new widgets, including CBS, Showtime and CNBC.

LG also has incorporated the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology across the full line of LED models. DLNA allows consumers to access content stored on other DLNA-certified devices within the home, such as computers, making content options almost limitless.

Providing easy options for connecting to the Internet, in addition to the wired Ethernet jack, all NetCast-enabled sets can integrate into a wireless home network by using a USB wireless broadband adaptor (sold separately). All models with NetCast also support multi-media playback from a connected USB device including photos (JPEG), music (MP3) and video (DivX HD).

For greater convenience and flexibility in setup and installation, all HDTV series with NetCast also offer wireless Full HD 1080p wireless transmission from a “Wireless Media Hub” from up to 98 feet. Connecting source components, such as Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes and video games to the media hub enables transmission to a compact receiver adaptor, which attaches to the back of the TV, hidden from view. This eliminates the need for individual components to be connected directly to the TV, making for a clean and easy installation and removal of the unsightly wires (Media Hub and receiver adaptor sold separately as a package).

Controls
LG’s LE9500 incorporates a unique “Magic Wand” remote system that provides an immersive interaction with the set. This “Magic” user interface brings together menus, component controls and even embedded games, which can be accessed using a simple remote that combines minimal buttons and gestures to control the on-screen activity, mirroring a “Wii-like” experience.

Energy Savings
Understanding consumers’ desire for products that reduce their household energy costs, most of LG’s LED and CCFL HDTVs have a variety of energy-saving features, such as Intelligent Sensor, to automatically calibrate and optimize brightness, contrast, white balance and color, based on the ambient light in the room, saving on energy output under most circumstances. Additionally, ISFccc calibration options allow consumers to work with a professional to set “day” and “night” levels for optimal viewing and brightness levels. All of LG’s 2010 LED LCD series also qualify for ENERGY STAR® 4.0 certification.

In total, LG unveiled six new series of LED LCD HDTV models for consumers – creating a robust HDTV line up of advanced picture quality, wireless technology and diverse screen sizes. Full details on the series are below:

Skype for Symbian enters beta
Posted by MobiG @ 9:08 pm

And no, we’re not talking about Skype Lite, either — a real, legitimate, native-code version of Skype has just hit beta for S60 3.1 and 3.2-based devices. Right now, 17 phones ranging from the E51 up to the N96 are supported — all Nokias — but more are promised by the time they get around to releasing a gold build. The app supports free Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G or WiFi, instant messaging, and file transfers, but one thing that it doesn’t support is video calling, which makes Fring’s recent release all that much more interesting. It can be installed over the air, so go ahead and grab it now — unless you’re using a 5800 or N97, that is, in which case we recommend you just sob quietly to yourself.
