Plenty of speculation being tossed around today, whether it’s regarding the BlackBerry Storm 3 or even more rumors about when the iPhone will launch on Verizon. Even the Palm Pre 2 might be landing on Verizon soon enough. Outside of the speculation, in our story from around the Web, we’ve got Lithium-ion Solar Street Lights getting launched in Japan in January next year. And then, we’ll wrap up the rest of the night with stories from around the R3 Media Network. Welcome to the Thursday edition of The Daily Slash.
From Around the Web
Panasonic and Sanyo Create EVERLED Li-Ion Solar Street Lights: As technology companies all over the globe figure out ways to create better technology, that also combines the efforts of an eco-friendly stature, we’re left watching even the most seemingly mundane pieces of technology being upgraded. For instance, Panasonic and Sanyo saw fit to fix street lights. The new versions, called EVERLEDs, combines the use of solar cells and Lithiu-ion batteries. The lights feature Sanyo’s HIT solar cells, which boast the highest-class conversion efficiency in the world, and more integrated thin solar cells. As you can imagine ,the electricity needed to power the lights is gathered from the solar panels, and then the energy is stored in the Li-ion batteries. The LED lights can be then be powered for up to 15 hours at night, without sun. The pair of companies plan on launching the new street lights in January, 2011, in Japan. [via FarEastGizmos]
Welcome to the Wednesday edition of The Daily Slash. Today wasn’t as hectic as the earlier parts of the week, but we did find out that Apple’s got an event planned a week from now. The speculation is already rampant, but we do know it has something to do with the Mac. In our story from around the Web, Sony’s got a new PS3 surround sound bar heading to the market next week. And then, to end the night, we’ll wrap up what’s been happening in the R3 Media Network.
From Around the Web
Sony PS3 Surround Speaker Bar Ships Next Week for $180: Sony originally unveiled their Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3 back at E3 this year, and since then, those who could remember its announcement have eagerly been anticipating its launch. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen all that quickly. But Sony’s about to fix that, as they’ve announced today that the Surround Sound Bar is heading to the market beginning next week. The speaker features an integrated subwoofer, and has plenty of different sound presets, including night, vivid, or standard. You can even change the bar into night mode, so that some sounds are accented and others are not, based on how loud the volume is turned up. The Surround Sound Bar should hit retail shelves next week, and it will come with a price tag of $180. [via Electronista]
As we march on through October, we’re having to keep up with companies all over the globe announcing something new. Today we saw the release of Sony products with Google TV, and we even got some on-time analysis of the upcoming products. In our story from around the Web, we’ll take a look at how Intel is doing, as they’ve just announced their third quarter results. And then to end the night, we’ll take a look at what’s been going on around the R3 Media Network. Welcome to the Tuesday edition of The Daily Slash.
From Around the Web
Intel Reports Record Revenue: Earlier this afternoon, Intel came forward and announced their third quarter results, which turned out quite good for the company. This is the best quarter they’ve had since the second quarter of this year, so it looks like Intel is on a continual rise. The company reported $3 billion in profit, on a record $11.1 billion reported in revenue. Interestingly enough, it looks like the bump in numbers doesn’t have anything to do with Atom-based netbooks, and has quite a bit to do with a three percent increase in laptops and server chips sales. True enough, considering Atom chips decreased by four percent.
With CTIA officially kicked off, it was a pretty busy few hours there earlier this afternoon. And with more events planned, and some not even at CTIA, it looks like the rest of the week is going to be just as busy. In our story caught from around the Web, NTT DoCoMo and Olympus have teamed up to create some Augmented Reality glasses. And then, as we usually do around this time of the night, we’ll wrap up what’s happening around the R3 Media Network.
From Around the Web
NTT DoCoMo and Olympus Team Up to Create AR Glasses: Augmented Reality was a hot commodity less than a year ago, and many thought it would literally change the smartphone market. While that hasn’t happened, it’s certainly not going anywhere any time soon. In the case of the AR Walker Augmented Reality glasses, which are a work in progress from Olympus and wireless network NTT DoCoMo. The glasses use a small display and a light guide which is placed on the right temple. The idea is that you use the glasses as normal, but when you look at a key element, the augmented reality will kick in, and show you something of interest about whatever it is you’re looking at through the bottom-right of the glasses. The glasses can connect to a cell phone, which NTT DoCoMo showed off at CEATEC in Japan. Neither one of the companies would comment on a release date or price, however. [via Tech-On]
Welcome to the Tuesday edition of The Daily Slash. Today was a pretty steady day for news, especially towards the end of the night. With CTIA kicking off, Motorola came out of the gate swinging, offering up full announcements for plenty of devices. But, in our story from around the Web, it looks like NVIDIA is starting to sell their own branded GPUs. And then, as usual, we’ll wrap up what’s been going on around the R3 Media Network.
From Around the Web
NVIDIA GPUs Start Popping up in Best Buy Stores: While NVIDIA may have grown accustomed to selling their graphics cards through other retailers, as well as support from ad-in-board partners to support the graphics cards, it looks like the company is ready to change that. However, while they’ve obviously begun to work with Best Buy to sell their own branded GPUs, it looks like the national electronics retailer may have jumped the gun and set the devices on store shelves before the official announcement. It looks like NVIDIA has turned to Foxconn to manufacture the GeForce GPUs. And, if you do happen to purchase one, or more, you’ll get a three year warranty for your troubles. [via Engadget]
It’s the first Monday of October, and right now we’re just about ready to wrap up the night. First up, as we take a look at stories from around the Web, we learn that Skype has just appointed a new CEO for the company today. And then, as usual, we’ll wrap up the daily happenings from around the R3 Media Network. So, hopefully you had a good Monday, and welcome to The Daily Slash.
From Around the Web
Tony Bates Named CEO of Skype: In their inevitable movement to becoming a public company, Skype today announced that they would be appointing a brand new body for the CEO position. A few minutes after the initial announcement it was confirmed that a senior VP at Cisco had been named. His name is Tony Bates, and he will be making his way to the Luxembourg, where Skype is headquartered. He will officially begin his CEO duties at the end of October. The speculation about Bates presence at the top of the ladder for Skype are focused on the enterprise, where he made a huge dent while working with Cisco. However, with Skype still trying to find its place in the mobile industry, in a bigger way, there’s a chance that the corporation will try some big things after Bates officially sits in the chair long enough. It was the first day of October, so hopefully it went well for you. In other news, it’s also Friday, which means the weekend is upon us, and we’ve all survived another week. Welcome to The Daily Slash. Tonight, we’ve got the strangest piece of iPhone accessory we’ve ever seen, and that could either be a good or bad thing. And then, as we wrap it up, we’ll take a look at what’s been happening around the R3 Media Network.
From Around the Web
This is the Umbilical Cord iPhone Charger: There’s plenty of third party accessories out there for your iDevice, but this one takes the cake for being the most . . . Disturbing. There’s not really a name for this thing, and truth be told, it really does look like a combination of a Facehugger from the Alien series, and an umbilical cord. And, while we may think the standard charger and cable is pretty boring, we don’t think you need to go this “outside the box” to make it look interesting. Or maybe you do. Your call. [via DVICE]
As we mark the last hours of the final day of September, we’re left with only one thing to do: The Daily Slash. So, welcome to tonight’s edition. In our story from around the Web, it looks like Time Warner’s CEO is chiming in about Apple TV’s pricing, and he’s not a fan. And then, just as we do every night, we’ll wrap up what’s been going on in the R3 Media Network.
From Around the Web
Time Warner CEO Says Apple TV Pricing Will Jeopardize Sales: Jeff Bewkes threw in his two cents regarding the pricing for the content found on Apple’s Apple TV. He said his piece at the Royal Television Conference in London, and he said that Apple’s pricing for low-cost rentals threaten sales of TV shows to branded networks. Bewkes pointed out that “new entrants” like Apple need to put up a “superior TV experience,” while doing their part to stimulate the market, and improving the overall economics. [via Apple Insider]
It’s the middle of the week, but in better news, we’re coming to the end of September. And that also means we’re just about into the fourth quarter of the year. Counting down the days now. Tonight, though, in the news from around the Web, we’ve got a Jaguar concept car that looks amazing. And then, as usual, we’ll wrap up things from around the R3 Media Network. So, welcome to the Wednesday edition of The Daily Slash.
From Around the Web
Jaguar C-X75 Electric Supercar Unveiled at Paris: The push for electric cars isn’t just a small one. Nearly every car manufacturer out there is working on getting their very own eco-friendly, electric vehicles out in the market. Jaguar’s brand new C-X75 electric supercar was just unveiled at Paris. It’s capable of reaching speeds of 330km/h, or about 205mph, and can reach 62mph in just 3.4 seconds. It has four 145kW (195bhp) electric motors –one for each wheel– which produces 780bhp in total. Two micro-gas turbines spin at 80,000 rpm, which extends the range of the supercar to 560 miles.
We’re at the start of another week, and it’s already seen a huge announcement. Let’s see if the rest of the week can keep up with the momentum put out today. In news from around the Web, Segway’s boss passed away today. After that, we’ll take a look around the R3 Media Network, and see what’s been happening. Welcome to the Monday edition of The Daily Slash.
From Around the Web
Segway’s Boss Dies While Riding the Segway: The Segway is a pretty popular item, and many would consider it a pretty safe device. On Sunday, the police were called to Segway’s boss, Jimi Heselden’s home, at 11:40AM. When they arrived, they found Heselden dead at the scene, and they recovered a county version of the Segway, believed to be the X2. The report rules out foul play, and it is believed that Heselden rolled off of a cliff and into a river wharf on Sunday, September 26th. Heselden was reportedly worth £166 million thanks to his defense contracts, as well as the success over the Segway.
