Farmville and Guitar Hero announced for iPhone
Posted by MobiG @ 9:04 pm
You knew it was bound to happen sooner or later — Farmville is heading for the iPhone. But that’s not all, Activision was also on hand at WWDC to announce an iPhone version of Guitar Hero, which packs classic rock from the likes of Queen and The Rolling Stones, and is available in the App Store today for $2.99. Check out a shot of it after the break, and look for Farmville to be available by the end of June — or don’t, it’s up to you.

Update:
Guitar Hero press release, with the complete tracklist and add-on packs, is now after the break.

Netflix app headed for the iPhone
Posted by MobiG @ 9:03 pm

Digg this! After two months of burning up the iPad, Netflix is ready to devour its latest platform: the iPhone. Just like the iPad app — where it reigns as the number one downloaded entertainment app, Netflix will have you know — it’s free, and you can pick up your playback from the last spot, as with all Netflix players. Unlike the iPad, the UI actually looks fairly optimized for the platform, including an app-optimized search of your instant queue. It also features “seamless” switching between networks, with 3G streaming apparently a go. It launches this summer.

iPhone 4G display put under a microscope, 960 x 640 a lock?
Posted by MobiG @ 10:54 pm

You’ve seen it in San Jose, you’ve seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you’re seeing the iPhone 4G display waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven’t been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone part in their paws, but hey, that’s what they claim. The guys from superiphone.cz have gone above and beyond the leaker’s call of duty, by taking the supposed next-gen screen under a microscope and figuring out its pixel density and display technology. According to them, the new iPhone will sport an IPS panel, much like the other handheld device Apple introduced this year, with a cool 960 x 640 resolution. This quadruples the total number of pixels from the iPhone 3GS — making rescaling of current apps a straightforward affair — while also giving Apple the right to claim the highest pixel density yet seen on a phone. You’ll find similarly zoomed-in pics of the Nexus One and iPod touch screens at the source, and the answers to all your iPhone-related questions at WWDC in a few days’ time.

Steve Ballmer Won’t be Making it to WWDC, or Dancing With the Stars
Posted by MobiG @ 12:13 am

Well, that was quick. We had brought you a story earlier today, about a particular analyst out there who believed, pretty strongly, that Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, would actually be making an appearance at this year’s WWDC. You know, the one that’s built around Apple’s developer community, and where they’re likely to announce the next iPhone. Apparently Ballmer was going to show up to announce something like Silverlight on the iPhone, or to announce iPhone OS and Mac development tools in Visual Studio 2010. Yeah, it was unbelievable, and sure enough, none of it’s true.

Ballmer WWDC 540x260

Thanks to Microsoft’s official Twitter, we can safely say that Ballmer won’t be making an appearance at WWDC. Furthermore, he won’t be showing up on Dancing With the Stars, either. And no, he won’t be riding in the Belmont, either. So, consider us relieved to see the hysteria calm down, but a little disappointed that we won’t have something a bit more “shocking” to cover at this year’s WWDC.

Not that the announcement of the iPhone HD isn’t great and all, but we would have loved to see Ballmer and Steve Jobs on the stage together, discussing things we never would have guessed they’d discuss together. Maybe next year. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tune into SlashGear’s liveblog of the whole event, because we’re pretty sure there’s going to be enough there to keep you satiated (at least for a couple of minutes). So join us June 7th at http://live.slashgear.com.

Debunk: Steve Ballmer not speaking at WWDC
Posted by MobiG @ 11:19 pm

An analyst named Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research set off a firestorm of rumors last night after he claimed that Steve Ballmer would appear onstage with Steve Jobs at WWDC for exactly seven minutes to announce Visual Studio development for the iPhone — and the maelstrom of crazytalk quickly expanded to include everything from a Bing partnership to Silverlight for the iPhone. Turns out all that chatter was just as insane and untrue as you’d expect, though: Microsoft’s official Twitter account just clamped down on the speculation, saying that Ballmer isn’t speaking at WWDC, or appearing on Dancing with the Stars. Sorry kids — looks like we’ll have to just hold out hope for next season.

WWDC 2010 sells out in just over a week
Posted by MobiG @ 11:59 am

Ahh, WWDC 2010.  A serious sit-down with developers and Apple working together to polish up the app landscape for the twelve months to come, or a chance to wear Steve Jobs masks and run around making crass Microsoft jokes?  If you haven’t already got your ticket you’ll never know, as this years conference is sold out.

wwdc 2010 sold out 540x242

That’s pretty fast work, considering tickets only went on sale on April 28th, and were a not inconsiderable $1,599 for the full five days.  As well as the new contents of iPhone OS 4.0 to pick over, there will be iAd developer workshops and a hefty dose of HTML5.

Of course, for the rest of us what we’re really excited about is the possibility of a few headline hardware announcements on the day one keynote.  The iPhone HD seems likely to make its first official appearance, Apple’s fourth-gen smartphone, while more recently we’ve heard mutterings of new, Core i7 hexacore Mac Pro desktops making their debut too.  SlashGear will be at WWDC 2010 bringing you all the keynote details in our usual liveblog, so join us on June 7th 2010!

iPhone HD expected at WWDC 2010: SlashGear will be liveblogging
Posted by MobiG @ 6:36 pm

So WWDC 2010 is fast approaching – June 7th we now know – and while developers may be concentrating on getting their apps up to speed with iPhone OS 4.0, the rest of us will be anticipating the debut of the iPhone HD.  The fourth-generation iPhone may have been unofficially previewed over the past few weeks, but we’re confident that Steve Jobs & Co. will still have a few surprises in store.  While we’d love to stuff you all in our bags and take you in with us, we’ll have to do the next best thing and run the traditional SlashGear liveblog at http://live.slashgear.com/.

iphone hd leak 31 540x356

So, what do we expect?  Well, a hardware redesign seems inevitable, and judging by the leaked prototype it’s likely to be a little smaller than the current iPhone 3GS and adopt blunter edges.  A higher-resolution camera with a flash is also on the cards, together with a front-facing video camera.  We’ve seen Apple patents recently for various NFC implementations, though there’s no guarantee that such technology would actually make it into this generation of hardware.

Finally, a speedier processor – tipped to be the same 1GHz Apple A4 as in the iPad – and a higher resolution, 960 x 640 display are probable.  There’ll also be iPhone OS 4.0, of course.  For all the details on June 7th 2010, join us at http://live.slashgear.com/ for the liveblog!
